I loved this book as a teenager and have been trying to source it for years. It was in great condition and cheap as chips; I'm a very happy customer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Etchison Is A Special Talent, but This One Fizzles 27 July 2014
By Brenda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
It pains me to give this 2 stars; I would have given it 2.5, if permitted.

Dennis Etchison is awesome, unique--he's a true artist. But his work is very uneven. I got the feeling that TV--that writing for TV--had messed up his pacing and caused him to rely too heavily on melodramatic convention. Okay, having said THAT, let me just say that there are a few passages buried in this dross that shine like alien jewels sculpted into man-made artifacts. That's the Etchison I love: his power to unearth weirdness out of everyday stuff, whether it's describing cars in an LA traffic snarl, or the inside of a transparent oxygen mask. I just wish Etchison would use his gifts to write on a big theme. He does this in his short stories, but in his novels...well, again, TV script-writing seems to have weakened his ability to sustain a strong narrative with good pacing. (Etchison has written that the novel as a form is no longer viable.) Dennis, I worship the ground you walk on, but this one was lacking. I loved Shadowman, now.

If you admire his work, though, you must read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eerie 24 Nov. 2000
By mellion108 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Doug loves his family. He's been a wonderful father to his step daughters and he does his best to keep his family safe and happy. Daughter Erin reaches out for comfort from teen angst and finds all the wrong influences. Doug must enter a dark, surrealistic world to save his family; he is taken to the utmost limits to see how far he will go for the people he loves.
Etchison is an amazing horror writer. His work is always a treat, and this novel does not disappoint. Be warned: this is a dark story with a not-so-uplifting message. Still, to get your hands on anything written by an author recommended by Stephen King, Charles Grant, Peter Straub, etc. is definitely worth the effort.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh. 11 Sept. 2009
By DJ Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Dennis Etchison has written some amazing horror fiction in his time. I would rank some of his short stories as among the best of his generation. With that said, this novel was very disappointing. I kept waiting for something horrific, or even INTERESTING to happen, but just when I thought something was coming, I was let down.

Without spoilers, here's the plot: A decent beginning leads to a plodding middle section and an overly-metaphysical ending. The End.

Etchison is better than this. Grab one of his short story collections to get familiar with his work and read this later as a curiosity.
