I'm giving this 3 stars because even though it was a well written story it didn't knock my socks off. The best book in this series, I believe, was Brawn and I gave it 5 stars because I just couldn't put it down and when I had to leave it I hurried back, it was a real page turner and I don't believe Darkness was.
I had really looked forward to reading Darkness' story, we had come across him in several of the other books and I daydreamed of him being the big hard cool hero who had a real soft side. OK so he was hard and maybe cool but we never saw the soft side of him until the end of the book.
I know he was meant to be controlling and scarred from what had happened to him but I feel that if someone was this damaged he would be an awful person to be around and probably suffering from clinical depression. I just couldn't imagine being married to him, I'd be afraid he would flip some day or night and smother me in my sleep.
Apart from all of that I just feel there was something missing from the story, Miss Dohner focused more on the 'New Species' story and less on what was happening between the couple. Funnily, I had written the word 'romance' there and then backspaced to wipe it out because I didn't feel romance was the correct word to describe what was going on between the couple... that may show better how I feel about the book.

had to add this note to let you all know how angry i am... i bought this book the moment it come out at £5.75 and I really felt it was very expensive...it was a pre order at this price...
Now 3 days later the price has been reduced to £3.77, so much for pre ordering a book on amazon or buying it straight away as you will be left feeling robbed only a couple of days late......sooooooooooooooo angry now

★Review★

It is no secret how much I love this series.

After 12 books, you might expect it all to be a bit samey - and it is in certain parts - yet, still manages to be refreshing and keeps me coming back for more, like the book version of Chocolate Cornflake nests from greggs! (I love those)

Darkness, not my favourite in the series - because I prefer it when they fall hard and fast and get all "MINE" in this series, but I still really enjoyed this.

The story fit, for who Darkness was and his past - anything else would not have felt right for his character.

Loved Kat too - she was strong in her own right and not willing to put up with less than she thought she deserved.

Also, lovely to see Fury and his family - I enjoyed the development of a brotherly relationships between him and Darkness almost as much as the romantic relationship between Darkness and Kat.

Overall a great 4 stars, and I am yet to get tired of this series.

This was a good read but not the best in the series, the characters were great as usual. it was very emotional at times and I had tears in my eyes reading but it lacked the romance of the other books in this series as darkness doesn't want a mate or any emotional attachment at all but he is very attracted to kat and is only willing to have no strings attached sex and this is where reading became emotional as kat wants more from him.
I couldnt stop reading and I did enjoy it but I would have liked more romance between the characters even though I understand why there was a lack of it but it didn't spoil the story.

Wow another amazing addition to this awesome series, these books just keep getting better and you get thrust into the world of the New Species and their worlds of survival through love, life and ignorant humans.

Darkness is one of the most haunted and so he thinks damaged from his captivity at the hands of Mercer and the one time he truly allowed himself to care and feel for a women whilst in captivity he soon learns the hard lesson of betrayal, distrust and heartbreak only deception can cause.

Feared by the other New Species for his coldness and reputation for brutality and deadly ability to strike when required, his brooding and unfriendly attitude soon has everyone stepping out of his way wherever he goes.

When Kat's boss at the FBI sends her into Homeland for Intel and to try and deceive the New Species, she goes of to do her job but hates his arrogance. As she is getting through security an attack on the gates leaves Kat acting on instincts and neutralises the threat to everyone there, killing humans is not her plan but bombs bullets and fight for life makes her act.

Darkness knows there is much more to Kat and as they discover flaws in her fake ID they decide to let her play out her teaching role, and as her and darkness spend more time together the lack of fear on Kat's part towards this hot sexy Alpha only draws her closer to Darkness and he enters a whole world of desire, lust, uncertainty and he must learn to let go of the past if he is to have any future with the fiesty, kick ass Kat who can enrage and tame Darkness all at the same time.
