This is a wonderful evocation of the Spirit of Christmas in Salisbury Cathedral's rightly famous
Advent service. It's a great recording to both relax and inspire you.

The readings are very good and it is glorious to hear 'O come, o come Emmanuel' and
'Lo! he comes with clouds descending' which are my two favourite hymns.

It is brilliant to hear a real choir in action from an authentic service in the perfect setting!

An excellent recording of a service of carols and hymns with readings for the advent season. A timely reminder of the preparation for the coming of Christ that is celebrated at Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Splendor of Salisbury Cathedral in Advent 9 Dec. 2014
By Donald A. Lowery - Published on Amazon.com

How can one have a favorite English Cathedral? As one blessed to travel in the UK I think I love every cathedral I have visited and appreciate the ways in which each one is unique. Yet, I do have a favorite, Salisbury Cathedral in the ancient English city of the same name. Though tinkered with through the ages by subsequent generations of Christians for which it has been both diocesan see and house of worship, it retains a unity of design unusual in most ancient churches and presents a visual vista that is breath taking. The Use of Salisbury, that is the way Mass and other acts of worship were celebrated prior to the Reformation, remains the structural basis of liturgy throughout the entire, world-wide Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church in which I am a priest is a constituent part.
This recording is of the special Advent service of music, lessons and prayer as it is done at Salisbury. As one would expect of the cathedral which is the Mother of Anglican Liturgy. the worship presented is of the highest caliber. The prayers are clearly enunciated. The lessons are well chosen, the music is spectacular. The cathedral is a vast space and because it is mostly stone and glass, the acoustics are very lively. Music, prayer and reading must be paced carefully lest the reverberation turn the sound into a muddy wash out. The pacing is perfect.
This is not a recording for believers only. I have friends for whom faith in God no longer makes sense. Yet they retain a certain nostalgia for some aspects of Christianity, especially the message of love and hope that is the emphasis of Advent and Christmas. For the nostalgic doubter, there are treasures to be found in this recording. It has the power to stir the sort of sentimentality that is not maudlin, but tinged with the hope that all people of good-will can unite in love to save humanity and the planet on which we live. Here is hope. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment 3 Dec. 2013
By sfh - Published on Amazon.com

The program--an all choral advent service, the music selected--from Palestrina to Britten (and all the O Antiphons), the performers--Salisbury Cathedral choir, all seemed to promise a wonderful, very exciting program.
I found it a big disappointment. The acoustics are wonderful and the singing is clear and accurate but, throughout, quite bland. The opening is the riveting Matin Responsory of Praetorius, "I look from afar..." It is taken at a dreary, plodding pace. Both the text and the music are full of the anxious expectation of advent, yet its delivery is bland and lifeless. Unfortunately this fine choir is not drawn out to anything much beyond that throughout the rest of the service. In most of the pieces, the end of each phrase is allowed an extraordinary pause, destroying any momentum or emotional drive the choir is able to create. Able, accurate, but very dull.

So that you don't rush into Christmas music prematurely. You don't want to be so full of Christmas music in early December that by Dec 25 & the octave following, you're sick of it!!!
