If I may boldly say, this is Aly Martinez at her best. Phenomenal in her storytelling, The Darkest Sunrise is a raw and highly emotive portrayal of two strangers bound together by their grief.

In many ways it reminded me of the poem “Soul meets soul on lovers lips” by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Granted it’s the unstemmed pain which flows though them that is the source of the recognition they share, but in this pain is the beginning of an unlikely but pure and honest relationship that blossoms.

It’s a book that already received much praise and after reading I too am among those showering Ms Martinez with adulation. She drives the story in such a way the reader is invested from the outset and such is the pay off i’m left in desperate need to the conclusion.

For those going in I would say to forget the hype and take it as it comes. If you receive it like I did, you’ll sure want NEED more.

Where is the ten stars option when you need it!

“No questions. No judgments. No faking it. “

WOW….. just WOW.

“One day, I was going to wake up and realize that, in my desperate escape from the pain in the present, I’d let the future pass me by.”
This book is impossible to review. I am not joking, it is just breathtakingly stunning, beautiful and more. It almost had me in tears the first few pages. My heart broke for Charlotte and Porter and what they are both going through. It was absolutely spectacular and amazing all the way through from page 1 til the end.

The Darkest Sunrise was a truly emotionally charged read for me! When Porter meets Charlotte I literally felt the soul searing connection that they have and it made my heart beat faster.-they are connected on such a level that you can almost see a tether from one soul to the other.
It’s not easy to put a story like this into words so that you feel the emotion that I feel as I write this review, for you to feel that you will have to read the book... and tryst me 3 days later I am still thinking about it!

Aly Martinez is a genius in my book and her talent is incredible! She has captured my heart with her words from the prologue and essentially she touched my soul as she delivers one of the most awe-inspiring, emotional, and captivatingly raw story that I have read this year.

-Aly Martinez , I felt the seed plant in my chest-

When Aly Martinez gets it right, boy does she get it right. This book had me hooked from very beginnings very beginning.

Whilst I cannot even begin to understand on any level what Charlotte's character went through, I had the deepest sympathy for her and have to say that what happened to her is beyond my worst nightmare, but from the Prologue I was so drawn to her.

Now where Charlotte was all darkness, Porter was most definitely the light . God did I love his personality. I loved his wit, I loved the way he absolutely got Charlotte in a way nobody else ever could.

This, for me, was probably my favourite Aly Martinez book. It was just one huge, emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. The story, despite it having some harrowing scenes, was so beautifully written and yes I did guess some things would happen but that did not dilute the effect in any way.

Quite frankly I don't have many words to say about this book other than I am desperate for the final part, the conclusion to Charlotte and Porters story. So if you love an emotional read then this book comes highly recommended.

There are no words that can convey what this book done to me! I rarely read a book which I finish and want to dive back into, that I would give 10 stars, that has me choked with emotion, but this is definitely one of those books.

This is my first read of Aly's and I read on a recommendation from a friend without knowing ANYTHING about the book, going in blind I have to say was definitely the way to go.

I felt EVERYTHING with this book, every word, every tear, every laugh. I highlighted the crap outta this!!

An amazing book, so beautifully written, to say it'll give you the feels is a massive understatement, a definite must read!!

Right from the start I was captivated by this book. The storyline was great. It was emotional, angsty, heartwarming and funny. In the back of my mind I did think the twist at the end was going to happen but the way it was done was really good! I cannot wait for book 2. Hopefully it won't be long...I need to know what happens!

4 - "Right now, it's just me and you in the dark..." Stars!

My first foray into the writing of Aly Martinez, was definitely a good one. The Darkest Sunrise offered up two broken characters, trying to find their way back to the light, and although pretty heavy in its themes, the story didn’t get bogged down with drama and angst.

This is one of those books that you cannot say a huge amount about the actual content of the story-line, for fear of giving massive chunk of the plot away or what will ultimately turn out to be a spoiler.

"Life sucks sometimes…"

The author has definitely got the knack of interweaving the lives of her characters, and pulling all the plot points together seamlessly so that the journey you take with them, although emotional is a pretty smooth ride for the reader, even though for the characters is more of an out-of-control rollercoaster.

Porter Reese; single dad, widower, struggling to keep his head above water and juggle all the facets of his life, while dealing with the crushing guilt of actions from his past.

Hiding in plain sight…

Charlotte Mills; single-woman, mother, struggling to keep herself out of the darkness, acting fine, in the hope that her friends and family think she’s not as close to the edge as she is, while dealing with the crushing guilt of actions from her past.

It was easier to stay in the darkness than it was to brave the sunlight…

The connection between them is instant, the banter and verbal sparring sweet and funny, the issues that they are both trying to deal with, and start to share with each as they gain trust are dark, desperately sad, and it is difficult to see how either of them will every truly be happy again.
