I've just re-read this book for the 5th time & it still keeps me in suspense even though I now know what is going to happen !!
I have enjoyed all Susan Lewis books (some more than others !), but I can honestly say that this is her best by far ... it is a great book that has stood the test of time as it would still rank in my all time Top 10 reads !!!!
If you have only read Susan Lewis's more recent books, then this one is definatly worth getting hold of !!!!

What a great book - the scope of this is a lot greater than any other of Susan Lewis's books and, I have to say, the best one she has written in my opinion
The majority of it is set in France during World War 2 with excellent descriptions of the privations and indignities suffered by the French from the occupying Germans.
It also has an excellent and very surprising conclusion.
Read it, I'm glad I did and I think you will be able to say the same.

Darkest longings kept me hooked throughout reading it, i couldn't put it down! it is one of susan's best stories so far and i definately recommend it to anyone!
i really sympathised with Claudine at the beginning and how Francois treated her, but as the book went on, i was anxious to find out how francois really felt!
by the end, i loved every single charatcer and felt that it was the perfect ending.
a great read!

I've read nearly all her books (only three left) and this one is definetely her best one. It is very original (no TV stuff), sexy, credible (I know I'm French) and suspensful. If you like "women books" and are ready to read something a little bit different than try it.

This is the first book I have read from Susan Lewis. I read 5 books by different authors for my holidays but Susan Lewis won my full admiration for a well researched gripping story set in France. This is a story following the lives of Claudine and her husband Francois as the main characters. The marriage is difficult at first and is surrounded by mystery and intrigue concerning her husband who is acutely disliked by many with accompanying horror stories about his behaviour. The setting is during the 2nd World War and has espionage, jilted lovers, suspicion, insane jealousy, steamy sex, torture and murder beautifully woven into the story. There is no time I felt I was lost as the writer has been excellent at taking me with her to follow the story. I was taken to a horrifying climax and betrayal at the end. I enjoyed very good use of English language and very credible dialogues. As soon as I finished reading I wanted to start reading the book again. I am sure I will read it again in the future.

By far one of my favorite Susan Lewis books. The story was a bit of a history lesson in parts,a very interesting story of war time france. It contains everything from hate to love, glamour to the gutter, rich to poor. It also has a few surprises (even shocks) when you really let yourself get into the story. Well worth a read, if you've never red a Susan Lewis before I'd recommend this one, it really shows what a brilliant story writer and researcher Susan Lewis is.

It is probably the best Susan Lewis book I have read and I have read most of them. There are twists and turns and it keeps you gripped. It is hard to put down. Amazing historical context which has been well researched. I have recommended it to my husband who will enjoy the intrigue and the setting context.
