The plot concerns itself with a mothers increasingly frantic attempts to discover exactly what had happened to her daughter when she is found after having been assaulted on the marsh. Although obviously in a desperate emotional state the central character of Mel, who narrates much of the book, came across at first as a bit irritating but that feeling soon dissipates as she tenaciously begins her own investigation.
Copperthwaite is very skilled at describing the people, relationships and historic squabbles that are part and parcel of a small village community and again I easily related to it. I guessed quite early on the identity of someone who also partly narrates the novel but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of it.
I now look forward to reading Barbara Copperthwaite's other books.
An incredible read that centres around one families desperate dilemma. An emotional read from the very first page when teenager Beth goes missing. Her distraught mother, Melanie's world is turned upside down in a flash. I really don't want to say anymore for fearing of giving this cleverly woven plot away. By the end of the story my emotions were all over the place, crying one minute and angry, wanting revenge on Beth's attacker the next.
Great characterisation and a truly unputdownable read. Highly recommended.
Poorly written and one dimensional. Near the end it was like the author had decided to add another story in my opinion. Boring, save your cash!
I didn't really like the (incredibly stupid, I felt) central 'Mum' character, Melanie - who too such a long time to realise the 'clues' thrown her way by conversations with people and who later had a personality takeover that I felt (like another reviewer), a different story took over at the end. At times I wanted to shake this person (despite her suffering)!
I did however keep reading all the way through - I felt annoyed by the 'drumming in' of facts and feelings that the author wanted to get across, which is usually unnoticed if handled subtly. It felt like magazine writing for me. But yes, I did want to find out the perpetrator. It just didn't capture my imagination - it didn't need to, it was all written down.
While Beth lays trapped in a coma in hospital, Melanie needs to find answers to these questions and uncover the truth about what happened in the marshes.
Filled with raw emotion, as you would expect, this is a harrowing story of lies and deceit, gradually peeled back until the truth emerges. The author vividly describes the acute pain and soul searching of the parents as they grapple to come to terms with what happened. But Melanie need to uncover the truth, drives her to make her own enquiries.
While I empathised with Melanie’s pain, at times she seemed too self-obsessed, which made me lose sympathy with her and left me feeling the novel was a little longer than needed. I can’t say any more without spoiling what is an emotional powerhouse of a story, with deftly handled twists and turns.
A difficult subject to read, but expertly handled. Well worth reading.
