Nicholas Monsarrat's first book in this series "The Master Mariner..Running Proud" is one of those books you will keep and not give away once you've finished reading it. There are books you read ,and then there are books you read over and over again. "The Master Mariner ..Running Proud " is of the second category for me . "Darken Ship" only wets the whistle of one wanting to find out how Matthew Lawe gets on in life. Understand that Monsarrat died after only finishing the first chapter of this book ,and left sparse notes as to how he intended to end this epic story. That being said, one more chapter of greatness is still worth more than most books in their entirety. If it sounds like I enjoyed it...I DID..most assuredly. Ann Monsarrat's forward explaining the writing process of the first novel is also insightful. "Darken Ship" will remain with my copy of "The Master Mariner ..Running Proud" to be enjoyed over and over again..the two can not be separated.
