An excellent read.
We join Archer and the gang on this next thrilling instalment of their quest. We are treated to further development of all the main characters, especially Writer. The suspense and drama are ratcheted up in a world yet more rich in texture and colour. The mixture of history and fantasy, magic and reality are toyed with in an expert fashion. I particularly love how genuine historical figures are brought to life, how their characters exist in a realm of half fiction and semi truth, all whisked along in a rollercoaster of a narrative.
The scope and depth of this novel is vastly increased. As layered as it is, it still hints at yet greater horizons, and tantalisingly offers us glimpses at far more distant vistas, which seem to demand exploration.
I’m very much looking forward to the next instalment, as it promises an explosion of action and intrigue.

This was great. It took the first book and totally opened up the scope. The finale was epic. Looking forward to more!

Format: Kindle Edition
Where the first novel created a sense of the main characters beginning to understand the complexity of the world beyond their vale, in this second one the scale and difficulty of facing their opponents expands with thrilling results. I could hardly believe as I came close to the end of the book how well the author retained a convincing degree of youthful innocence with the characters' growing ability to face varied and sinister challenges. The reader is never patronised - the youngsters are charmingly distinct from one another, while the schemes of the adults are believable yet mysterious. The suspense and the sense of the 'elementalists' crucial role in the concurrent stories - their own and that of a far broader conflict - is masterfully woven into an enthralling and vivid tale. I can't wait to find out what comes next!
