I'm afraid I had to give up on this after a couple of chapters as it is so deadly dull. I like descriptive narrative as I think it is important to be able to visualise a character's looks and personality, but this was overdone. Having Rose, the lead character, mentally going around the tea table describing each person at it, was really tedious. It would have been better to describe one member of the family, then at another point describe another, for example, not all at once! The story started off quite well and was a bit unusual, two post girls on early rounds, one of whom was a young widow, so not the usual virginal innocent romantic tale, but the story just dragged. As a made for TV play perhaps it might work, but as a book, I was falling asleep trying to read another page. I had hoped that after trials and tribulations Rose would get her husband Ray back, that he would not actually have died in the war, but being so bored with the story I searched his name to see if that was what happened, planning that if he did I would read on, but that was not the case so I gave up. The information about life in the war was useful, but I would prefer to read it in a history book not a fictional novel. Sorry but if all the books by this author are written like this then she is not an author for me.

I always enjoy Pamela Evans sagas, and this was just as good. The main charcters, Alfie, Rose, Johnny and Hazel all link together to create a good story.

Rose and Alfie's relationship is the most tender and the development of the little boy who is trapped after the blitz kills his mother and traps him in the family home is heart wrenching. With no other living relatives Alfie suddenly discovers his father, Johnny - a journey hard for both of them to discover the love for each other.

As with all Pamela Evans books, there is always one character who makes you want to scream - you can see what they are like, but no one else in the story can - it takes a few hundred pages, until the rest of the characters discover how much Hazel wants to make them scream as well!

The minor charcters are just as relevant in this book, Joe and Alan (Rose's brothers) journey through the age of being accepted for service during the war and the dangers it brings for the former and finding confidence in himself, for the latter brother. Joyce also reflects a time when falling in love proved to be a difficult when you had people away at war.

My only critcism of this book, was although there was obviously a secret between Bill and May, Rose's parents, it was not made intriguing enough throughout the book and was wrapped up in a few pages towards the end by the arrival of a very very minor charcter who brings the whole tale stumbling out. This thread could have made even more of a page turner for the book, than it already was. Not enough to put me off reading anymore of her books.

This Book was truly such an Amazing story line. Packed with helping little
Alfie from the ruins of his bombed house. By Rose. And that she met his
Father he didn't know he had. And the upset of her Brother. Being blinded
In the war. And her Parents secrets from the family. that came to a head.
But was resolved well. And the Ever drama Queen Hazel. Who was Johnny's
Fiance. Alfies Father. But lots of Action. And I couldn't put the Book down
Till I came to the end. Very enjoyable .Lots going on in this and Love in this
That Rose got to be with Alfie. And the Man she loved in the end.
Hazel didn't get what she craved for. .she spoilt it for herself
But won't spoil this reading for future buyers of this Book. But I would say
It certainly is Great Reading. And a Wonderful story. Couldn't put it down.
I will truly read it again as it was Amazing. And Packed with lots of action
This Book from me Deserves all Five stars .I could give more but it's the
Ultimate of Five so if you love War stories and Romance and
Plenty of action then do read this. It's lovely. thank you Pamela Evans
