Gillian Flynn is the real deal, a sharp, acerbic, and compelling storyteller with a knack for the macabre (Stephen King)
Gillian Flynn's writing is compulsively good. I would rather read her than just about any other crime writer (Kate Atkinson)
With her blistering debut Sharp Objects, Gillian Flynn hit the ground running. Dark Places demonstrates that was no fluke (Val McDermid)
Gutsy, atmospheric and suspense-loaded (Fanny Blake Woman & Home)
I don't think I'll read a better thriller this year (Alex Heminsley BBC 6 Music)
This is only Flynn's second crime novel . . . and demonstrates even more forcibly her precocious writing ability and talent for the macabre (Daily Mail)
Dark Places, Flynn's second novel, confirms her exceptional talent (Times Literary Supplement)
Dripping with ominous atmosphere, complex psychology and moral ambiguity (Big Issue)
This is a dark and intelligent crime thriller suffused with dread (Catholic Herald)

The sheer horror of the situation, the foul characters, the whodunit buildup, etc made me want to read it to find out the outcome. I thought in the end it worked. This is fiction after all. The character I most admired was the mother - can you imagine how you would feel if you felt your little boy was going to end up in trouble? A desperate situation where she felt cornered. Ironic, that the person she was trying to save was lost already - love can do crazy things.
Think of real life occasions where couples have killed. Where they pressured into it? Was it some warped act of empowerment? There was a lot more going on in this book than meets the eye. It was not really about Diondra - she was a lost, freak! It was the effect she had on others, and the sad events that came about in the end that made me go WOW!
A 5 from me - I read it in a day when I should be doing other stuff! Any book that takes me away from my life like this deserves the high rating...
There is a lot to enjoy in this book - I haven't seen the film yet so no idea how it compares - but the reason it's a 4 for me is the ending left me a little disappointed. I can't tell if there's a likelihood of a sequel or if the author has deliberately left it in this open-ended way which allows you to come to your own conclusions about what the future holds for her characters. I suspect it's the latter and judging by the reactions of my book club, some will love and some will hate that.
One of the better books I've read this year, will be looking for more of this author's work.
I picked up very much so 50% of the way through right through to about 99% and then the bombshell. Or not.
The book finished like finishing a sentence half...
Completely anti climatic.
The characters irritated me. The plot was predictable out not enjoyable but only for 40% of the time. It felt to me that i was reading to see when the action would actually kick off.
Would I recommend it? Well, maybe if you could pick it up for under a pound. Otherwise I'd say think twice because if i had this I had copy it'd now be in a charity shop.
Love everything in the book, I would be foolish to say otherwise. Some of the outer characters are not as rounded as much as the main characters, but it's 'amazingly' well planned out.
A husbands worst fears realised. Dream girl, cool girl, nightmare girl!
'Amazing' how easy blame is is directed at one partner once any detail of a relationship is given.
Just shows you can never judge someone else's relationship, even when you may know both as individuals. Fiction can be strange but life is always stranger.
Some relationships do bring the best out in both partners, while other relationships drain one or both partners of all life. There is always hard work to be done and when one partner stops trying it is going to get very rocky, although some just like it that way ... You make your bed and have to lay in it ...
Sleep tight tonight and always be at your best!
It took me a good 15/20% to get into the story but once I did I was hooked. I have to admit up until then I kept changing my mind about what happened but then it started becoming quite obvious.
It was around this point that I started changing my feelings towards the main characters - Nick & Amy - too. At first I was disliking one and warmed to the other, but then it completely reversed even with everything that kept coming out of the woodwork about them. Go though - I absoutely loved her and her wit all the way through!
I enjoyed the story but I wasn't totally struck on the writing style. I found the use of so many brackets quite distracting as I had to go back and reread the sentence at points. I did like the diary format though and it wasn't confusing for me going from past to present. The ending was a bit abrupt, though I think the story was the right length and there would have been information overload if it carried on.
All in all it was a gripping read and a 4* from me.
