I was in no way disappointed. I have a love for the science fiction and mystery genres and Dark has captured those both for me. As I started to read, the plot and character development was written in such a way that I was put in mind of the old style adventure games that owners of the Comodore 64 or Amstrad 128 will be familiar with! This was in no way a bad thing, rather the skilful way in which the author has allowed the reader to start the journey with the characters and seemingly make discoveries with them along the way. Not one of the characters has the whole story and by the end of this instalment neither does the reader.
I am very much looking forward to the next instalment(s) and continuing my voyage of discovery.
Dark is a very readable story for all age groups and I would thoroughly recommend it.
It's self-published so there are a few typos that, pedant that I am, caught my eye but I hope that enough people read and review the book to get an agent and publisher interested in order to employ, as Paul said to me, "someone what can spell proper".
Definitely recommended. Switch off the lights and enjoy Dark...
However that is where the similarity ends, as the book opens you feel that these characters aren't human straight away. They live in a world without light and yet are intelligent beings. What is going on?
There are shades of Duncton Wood in there as well. That ambiguity draws you in and the strong story telling hooks you.
It's a fun book for anyone who loves the Science Fiction / Fantasy genre with plenty of stuff that is unique to stop it just being 'another one of those books' . It's suitable for all ages from YA upwards and I'm really looking forward to reading the next instalment when it arrives.
The characters were diverse (although not sure I was reading some of the names right!) and each brought their own niche to the story. I would happily let my 10 and 13 year old daughters read this as there is no content in the book that would be inappropriate.
If you like maze runner, hunger games and that sort of read then give this book the once over!

From the blurb this didn't sound like the kind of book I'd normally enjoy, but a friend recommended it when I was looking for something...Read more
