This is the first book of this series I have read. Most of what I needed to know from the first book was filled in here. Which was great. I got a good sense of the main characters Dominic, Cassidy , Serge and Jackson. The only problem I had with this book was at time it seem too drawn out. Some parts were too long, I understand building suspense and anticipation, but I do think some parts were written longer then necessary. However when the action started is moved at vampire speed, needing me to read bit again in case I missed something.
I quite like the idea of a young Vampire taking on much older and stronger Vampires, however this is not what the story is mainly about. Dominic and Cassidy share a connection that is rare even between vampire. Drinking their victim's blood the vamp can read the thought of their victim creating a sort of one way psychic link. For Dominic and Cassidy the link goes both ways essentially joining their souls. During one of his feeding hunts Dominic meets another Vampire who awakens something dark within him, something he cannot share with his soul mate Cassidy, breaking their bond and causing a wedge between them, but both of them have a destiny that can only be fulfilled with them together, and how does Dominic's sire fit into all this.
This is a good book that can be read as a standalone story, as I said the most of the back is filled in through the book. This is more of an emotional story (with some heart wrenching choices) which in some parts do go on but is mostly done extremely well.

First off, I want to say that the best thing about this series is that there are no cliffhangers but I always want to know what’s going to happen next. I can’t help but think about the characters after the story ends and hence my impatience about reading the next book. It’s one of those stories that don’t let go even after having finished reading the book a few days ago. I WANT MORE!!
The main threat from the previous book makes its way into this one and I knew that my beloved characters were not going to have an easy time of it. Dominic or Nic as he’s called still holds my heart. Seriously. I’ve never read such a vampire that had a sweet, charming, dangerous, sexy and troubled personality. He’s still a fledgling vampire trying to contain the “beast” within. The “beast” simply refers to a vampire’s base needs that could go out of control and can kill. Nic has that constant battle but he’s one of the good vampires.
Top 5 reasons to get this book:
1. Constant turmoil
Nothing is easy this book/series. The love story between Dominic and Cassidy is always under stress. Just when you think it’s going good...BAM!
Who doesn’t love a kooky vampire? He’s so cute, but crazy. He’s the pain in Nic’s butt, BUT! I have a feeling that he loves that crazy guy.
3. The villains
You’ve got the big honcho vampire Kymbyses. Super old and powerful vampire. However, it’s really his evil underlings that you have to watch out for as well.
4. The vampire hunters
I dislike Jackson and his family of vampire hunters. But maybe there is a way to redeem him? The jury is still out on that one. You can kind of understand their reasoning, but I’m on team Nic and Cassidy all the way!
5. Vampire scents
Yes, they smell. Each vampire has a scent. The descriptions are so vivid that I can actual smell it when I’m reading along. Cedar, frost, smoke, it’s all there.
I highly recommend reading book one Dark Heart of the Sun first. They won’t read as standalones.
I did enjoy the first book, but I think that the sex scenes kind of stopped the plot in its tracks a few times, and took some time to get back. This story though is more of an action thrill ride instead of a romance which I enjoyed so much more. Dominic and Cassidy are still getting over the horrific ordeal that they just got done facing at the end of book one. Dominic and Cassidy still share a blood bond whenever he feeds from her, but he’s of the scared of the prophecy coming true, so he tries to stay away from her as much as possible. He also hasn’t fed from her as much as he used to. The link gets weaker the longer he goes and Cassidy is getting frustrated with him. Jackson is also trying to get over Cassidy by dating some other people, but he still tries to watch over her as much as possible, by trying to sneakily get Dominic out of the picture any way he can. One night while Dom is out trying to find someone to feed from, he runs into a vampire he’s never seen or heard from before named Bijou. She doesn’t seem to be much older than him but she’s much stealthier and deadlier. Dom realizes how bad things are getting and he tries to go and kill Bijou, but she always seems to be one step ahead. She tells him that his sire wants to meet with him named Kambyses. Dom and his friend Serge do some research and realize Kambyses is the very first vampire ever created. Kambyses compulsion is so strong that Dominic is starting to think and do things he wouldn’t normally do, and Cassidy knows she must do something to protect Dominic, even if it means being bitten and eventually becoming a vampire herself. After the compulsion wears off and Dominic is himself again, he tracks down where Kambyses and Cassidy are and vows to get her back, even if it means teaming up with the one vampire hunter who hasn’t stopped trying to kill him.
I really enjoyed this story. The stakes were much higher (no pun intended) and it was very fast paced and didn’t stop in its tracks to have any info dumps. There were moments I was unsure of where the plot was even going because Dominic was totally on board with dying if he had to, to protect the ones he loved. I was unsure if he was going to make it out of every situation ok or not.
