Product Description

Review

'Paul Farley's latest book may be dark by its title and themes, but it is given a redeeming hope in the quality of its prosody, its poetic musicality, and the muscularity of its contemporary images so neatly fused with those of the past.' --Stride

'The Dark Film displays his peculiar talent for viewing ordinary objects - and his Northern upbringing - from unusual angles. Gazing through coloured sweet wrappers in Quality Street enables kids to hype the moment, dye the day and rob the hour.'
--Sunday Telegraph

'Farley elsewhere delves into his 1960s childhood, evoking a world of everyday hardships and consolations. This view of the past is by turns gritty, urban and nostalgic but also, thankfully, broader than his own experience of it, courtesy of historical references and plenty of colour.' --Literary Review

Format: Hardcover
This is an extremely accomplished collection of poems, which in many ways reminds me of the work of Philip Larkin. It is (almost) that good. That is because Paul Farley has a real grasp of poetic form and something important to say - and his work is very much located in England as it is now. Highly recommended.

This is a beautiful collection by one of the finest contemporary poets of the day, and it wholly deserves to win the T S Eliot prize this year. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Whilst reading this collection of poetry I had an experience that I haven't had since being a teenager on ecstasy. I actually came in my pants.
