5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book 11 Nov. 2016

I really enjoyed this book! It is not usually a genre that I read but I assigned it to my book club to help us all branch out (Mara Prose Virtual Book Club). I must admit, at first I was a little lost but once I was given some of the back story on Daemons, it really peaked my interest. The love story is touching and the book definitely keeps pulling you back in to find out what happens next. I cannot wait until the next installment. I highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Few Holes and An Iron Deficiency 5 Sept. 2015
By Jami Leigh - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Jade Shear is a seemingly ordinary human girl who owns a bookstore. She is a curvaceous redhead with a no-nonsense attitude. She was given a gift from the Goddess Jibreel, which she calls a curse, of clairsentient, but she can actually change the person’s emotions she is feeling, not just feel emotion. This gift has drawn the attention of the daemons, both the Djinn and the Shaitan. The Djinn are the protectors of the humans and the Shaitan, the torturers of humans. The Goddesses tell Nias Hu’dor, a Djinn daemon and sexy fierce warrior, that he needs Jade to rescue his brother Joss from Sheol (hell). When Nias walked into Jade’s bookstore and he “first saw the backside of the statuesque redhead twirling a single curl and lounging on her forearms at the book counter his body began to boil. He knew right away he was staring at trouble”. He has sworn to not fall for another human. Jade sees “Mr. Tall, Dark, and Broody” and a sudden wave of lust crashes over her. In her mind, she knew she was in trouble, “but her body seriously objected; it had gone to the dark side and it was staying”. Will these two be able to resist their sizzling magnetism long enough to rescue Joss or will they lose everything in Sheol?

Nias is hot, or at least he is in my head. Oh holy cow, this author paints a very vivid picture of his hotness that is panty-melting worthy. I don’t use that phrase often. He is this ultra-alpha male, but yet has this soft side, that is definitely not his body. “Hot man cooks hot food, life is good” should be my motto for life (I can’t say hot enough). In fact, the whole Djinn race seems to be this super-hot, porn star looking daemon. Maybe Channing Tatum and Matt Bomer are really Djinn (wink wink).

I got to the point where I am 60% through the book and I am starting to get frustrated. Our leading lady’s “innocence” is starting to really annoy me. It’s one thing to be a virgin daemon slayer and to have a sense of humor; it’s another to keep acting like a freaking ding-bat 6 year old. Our alpha male, seems to be a little more then turned on by the innocence, but from a reading standpoint, if I am standing in the depths of hell, I am going to pull my head out of my ass and start fighting things, not standing around giggling and making jokes. I almost wish that they sexy parts were either more descriptive or just a gloss over of sex, it starts with a lot of detail and then it’s wrapped up too quickly. There were also a lot of inconsistencies with the sex scenes, like Jade would be taking off her boots, but then she would be falling in the tb with her shoes on. Nias was going to teach her things, but by the end of the one small paragraph, he was coming. I feel like it almost would have been a better story with more thrills and a gloss over of sex.

Overall, I did enjoy the story and would like to see another book written so we can see what happens between Nias and Jade and so we can see if the Djinn defeat Iblis. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this review. I ended up going with 4, but if there were half-star options, I would have given it a 3.5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkly Dreamy 15 Sept. 2015

I've been waiting for this book's release for a very long time and I have to say…totally worth it!

I love when authors take on the task of infusing new life and new breath into a plot or trope we've all read or think we've read before. This book shatters those boundaries and uses the broken pieces to build a completely new, sturdy and frankly breathtaking backdrop.

Female protagonists are challenging creatures to portray in the context that one doesn't want them too strong or too weak. We need to see both a stubborn will and small measures of vulnerability that only make their strength more enviable.

Jade Shear is a perfect example to this rule. Intelligent, sassy and pithy, she can hold her own and yet displays charming moments of uncertainty and doubt. In many ways, she parallels the attitude of one of my fave fictional characters, Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), combining the essence of innocence and old soul. Beautifully depicted, Jade's struggle with her feelings regarding her gift/curse lends the story a beefier and more personal edge as she reluctantly embraces her destiny.

Nias. I don't even know how to accurately describe this delish Djinn. Bossy, arrogant, unwavering and sexy as hell. Sign me up! Fierce and predatory, his own internal struggle regarding any feelings he has for Jade adds yet another lovely element to this tale. He needs her…and he hates that. He wants her…this also bothers him to a certain degree. I love when big, strong, complicated rogues find their matches, it's always entertaining to see it unfold.

One of the highlights of this read for me is the fact that the Djinn, typically represented in unfavorable light as being cruel monsters are actually the 'good' guys in a unique way. They are humankind's protectors and this vivid portrayal underscores all the 'gray' areas between good and evil.

Well written, fast dialogue and completely fluid, I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Treadway's and Mr. Speca's maiden voyage together and look forward to many, many more stories they share. I highly recommend this book!

OMG this book is hot. This book was both not what I expected and more than I expected. You will have to read it to understand that statement. The story is original, well crafted, unique, exciting, thrilling, action-packed, compelling, suspenseful, heartbreaking, humorous at times, seductive and arousing. And did I say hot?

Well written and well worth reading. You will want to read this book so buy it!!!
