This is a decent Prepper book with an interesting lead character in Roger. When an EMP hits Roger and his family are pretty ready. The first half follows the group as they travel to their refuge.
Unfortunately, the area has been taken over by a ruthless militia and the second half deals with the battles needed to defeat this militia.
The book ends showing that the government is indulging in some population cleansing of its own, and Roger's battles look like continuing.
The battles were a bit lengthy but The book was interesting overall and I like the fact that Roger's parents are active members of the group.

This was definitely a book of two halves for me. The first half was okay but the second half started to lose me with the American patriot bits and the long gun battles at the end

HASH(0x9a332e58) out of 5 stars I liked it looking forward to the sequel 14 July 2013

Well it's evident that this book was written by a man and that he spent at least some time in the military and that he knows a little bit about guns. With that said I still enjoyed the story. I'm a wife of a retired Senior Chief (also likes his guns) and a mother of one in the air force and one a security guard so I understand about being "ready". I found that while reading this story I kept thinking I know this is fiction but what if? It seems so realistic. The characters seemed very real no super hero's, no paranormal BS just normal people who had prepped for a crisis taking care of their own and helping out the good guys along the way. It was a good read. Maybe could have used a little more "fun banter" chatter between characters but since it was a man writing... well, maybe their just not as good at that as I am :) anyway, I'm actually looking forward to reading the next book.

HASH(0x9a5294c8) out of 5 stars Dark Days Rough Roads 14 Mar. 2013

This was well presented and has a particular value for folks initiating a preparedness program, and adds value to those whose preps are more developed. Even for those who don't have the financial or other resources as the characters, it should help stimulate ideas on how to best use those available.

Military issues, security, and terrorism are subjects I am not unfamiliar with, I have some work that has been published on counter-terrorism so the general storyline is not unbelievable. I've been working on preparedness since the 1980's and found a couple of new twists and concepts to explore for our program. I really enjoyed it.

The writing was generally crisp, there were a couple of difficult passages that could have been improved, but all in all the editing missteps were very minor and did not interrupt the flow at all.

I soundly recommend this book.

HASH(0x9a70f924) out of 5 stars Atrocious. 13 Sept. 2013
By Blizz - Published on Amazon.com

I'm an avid reader of post-apocalyptic fiction. I don't review books any more on Amazon, mainly because I simply don't have time, and would rather spend what little free time I have actually reading instead. However, after struggling through the first 20% of this "book", I felt compelled to log back in and leave a review.
PLEASE do not waste your money on this. If an "author" is careless enough to publish a work that hasn't even been proofread at a 4th-grade level, or even spellchecked, then does he/she really deserve your money?
This is quite simply the most disappointing Kindle book I've ever purchased, and I've struggled through some real duds. There's nothing new here (at least in first 20% of the book). It's a tired, old rehashed story that's becoming all too prevalent in the genre these days ... the power goes off and someone has to travel a ways across a country descending into chaos. There is no value added here, folks. There's no interesting tips, no good intel, no character development ... you get the point. Save your money and look elsewhere for something to read. I'd rather read the nutrition labels of my canned goods than try to forge a few more pages into this atrocity.
If I could give this e-book zero stars, I would.

HASH(0x9a529b4c) out of 5 stars One of the best 11 July 2013

I've read a bunch of this type of story in the past few months and this is one of the best. I've seen complaints about the editing but actually thought this book had a lot less typos than most of them.

It carried the reader along and I found myself waking up at 3 am and pulling out the Kindle to see how he and his family were doing! It flows very well and the author avoided the pitfall of feeling as if he had to kill everyone off to make it "real".

All in all I thought it well worth the read and - even if you aren't into survival/prepping - very informative!

HASH(0x9a332bf4) out of 5 stars Dark days, rough read. 21 July 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This book is a waste of money. There was no evidence of any type of proof reading or editing. I am surprised that the author ever made it out of elementary school. There were numerous syntax errors, run on sentences, contradicting tenses, and the dialogue lacked content. Many times the author used the wrong word (there versus their etc.) There were several instances of inconsistency throughout the book that simply made reading it a chore. Many times, scenes jumped around making it hard to figure what was going on.

There is absolutely no character development for any of the characters. At a minimum, there should have been some development of the main character (Haliday). By the end of the book, I still felt as though I knew very little about the main character other than he is a pompous arrogant pile that I could not bring myself to like.

The story line is very unbelievable. The first few pages offered a little promise, but everything fell apart very fast. I understand the idea of prepping, but Haliday seems to have just the right thing where ever he is to solve whatever problem he is confronted with, which makes the story TOO far-fetched. He also seems to have a lot of electronic items that work even after an EMP style attack. Overall, the story lacked detail in some of the important areas, and was too wordy in others.

I feel like I wasted a lot of time reading this. I kept expecting it to get better, but that never happened. Don’t waste your time or money.
