Review

"Walter H. Hunt is the new master of military SF. A rollicking, compelling, wonderful debut--the pages fly by a warp speed."

About the Author

Walter H. Hunt has nearly twenty years experience in high tech as a software engineer and techincal writer. His writing relfects an abiding interest in history, his area of college study, but science fiction has been his favorite reading material since he watched Neil Amstrong walk on the moon when he was but a lad. He is an active freemason and a lifelong baseball fan. He lives in eastern Massachusetts with his wife and daughter. " The Dark Ascent "is his third novel.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is the third book in the series and there is no point in starting here. For those who have the read the first two, this is more of the same, ie. excellent science fiction. You will have to go a long way before you get a series as good as this. Comparisons with other series are past, these books have developed and Walter Hunt has done an excellent job balancing the various aspects of the books. These are not just about space warfare but also contain considerations on the morality of war from different perspectives.

On to the detail. We are now at the stage where we get a slowly building development of the enemies to the zor/human alliance. The vuhl are now a significant part of the story with information given on how they are also being manipulated. We also find out that their system of government is volatile and that they have legends just like the zor. While the puppet-masters are more active but equally elusive. New characters are introduced, while others die, new strands are being developed with the vuhls and Imperial Intelligence.

Walter Hunt has managed to maintain the high standard he set with the first two - you will not be disappointed by this one and I am looking forward to book 4.
