This book is, in my opinion one of the best artbooks ive ever bought. The images of Daphne Yap are beautifully detailed and very creative. Initially i was unsure whether to buy it or not due to lack of reviews and insight into the product but let me assure you it is well worth the buy.
If you have any interest in illustration or art I would strongly recommend buying this inspiring book.

HASH(0x945c5190) out of 5 stars Might not appeal to everyone 19 Jan. 2009
By Parka - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Daphne Yap is a freelance artist working in Los Angeles doing concept design.

As this book is on sketches, don't expect anything polished, although some of the details are intricately rendered with pencils. There are concept designs on fashion, creatures, insect ladies (no typo here), sea creature ladies (no typo here as well), toy designs and other sketches.

The theme throughout has a heavy focus on surrealism and fantasy.

The pencil sketching style might not appeal to everyone. I personally prefer pen and ink sketches more.

HASH(0x945c51f0) out of 5 stars Thoroughly creative 13 Jun. 2007

The cover of this book does not do the interior justice. I'd seen it for sale on various websites, and really wasn't interested. I had the chance to thumb through a copy, and what's inside is spectacular. Daphne has some delightfully creative designs inside, and a profound attention to detail and line.

The interior is entirely expertly rendered pencil line drawings. If I were to nitpick anything, I'd simply like to see more.
HASH(0x93e415a0) out of 5 stars More than sketches 6 Sept. 2010

I bought this book on a recommendation from my boyfriend, who asked me one day "Have you heard of Daphne Yap?". Um, who? He told me I should look her up as he thought I'd like her art. The web search I did led me to a few pieces of her work and they were sort of conflicting - similar styles of general art but very different themes. Then I saw this book. I'd liked the style of the art I'd seen but it was hard to get a sense of just what she did online, I liked the cover of this book but still I wasn't sure. So I asked the bf - was he sure enough that I should order her book? Yup.

He was right. This book is amazing, though maybe too short. The description isn't kidding - you'll find things like chickens crossed with ballerinas or cats crossed with bagpipes. But you'll also find more normal looking people with unique fashions. Toy lines that would make your children cry. Etc. Unique sketches that deserve a look or two. Heck they deserve to be called something better than sketches as I think of sketches as something more like silly doodles I do.
