For me the concept of a western romantic suspense was delightfully fresh. It was particularly accessible for me, because the author very cleverly made the story span the Atlantic. I also enjoyed the way the book was broken into bite sized pieces, giving views form different characters. I actually read the book on a train journey, but the structure is also perfect for dipping in and out in snatched moments, if your life is busy.
Jane Hunt's cast of characters are authentic and well drawn, and they pull you into the story right from the first page. The leads, Jennie and Jared, are sympathetic characters, who both have tragedy in their lives, and I was rooting for them right through the book. As the story unfolds, the twists and turns build the tension very well. It's great that along with the suspicion and fear there's also a heart warming love story threading through. We're talking heat and dust here, with some very hot moments. There's plenty of raunch on this ranch, and these scenes are deftly handled by Hunt. It's raw and gutsy, but also tender. Hunt also creates a very evocative and believable setting, and the sensitive way she wrote about the horses on the ranch really stood out for me.
This fab suspense is intriguing and gripping, but the love story makes it a must-read. It's satisfying on many levels, and will transport you to a whole new world of cowboy boots and skinny dipping, trucks and colts, ranch yards and corals, porches and sheriffs. And then there's and overlay of jealousy and retribution, brooding suspicion, and tragedy and secrets.
Who doesn’t love a good Western romance—the ranches, the brooding cowboy who loves the land and understands the business of working it, the horses, the earthiness…the cowboys (oops already mentioned the cowboys!). Anyways, add in a healthy dollop of suspense and I’m all in.
Jared and Jennie have history—the kind that saw Jennie leaving the Unicorn ranch. In the intervening years we see that Jennie has grown up and blossomed into a woman who knows what she wants, so that by the time tragedy brings her back into Jared’s life, the two of them are meeting on more of an equal footing. As they deal with recent tragedy and escalating danger, attraction still blisters between them. But are they safe to give in to their passion and try navigating their past in order to forge a future, or will what’s happening at the ranch have them turning against each other? Who can they trust?
The story is written in bite-sized point of view changes and has more of a cosy mystery edge to the suspense that I really enjoyed as it allowed the author to focus on the developing relationship between hero and heroine. Rest assured though, there is still danger, passion, plenty of intrigue and some deft surprises thrown in to keep the interest and enjoyment level high. There is a subtle darkness that is well executed and ramps up nicely throughout the plot so that if, like me, you like your Westerns with a side-order of psychological suspense, you’ll love The Dangerous Gift.
A Dangerous Gift, was a book that had me so intrigued I couldn’t put it down!
When Jared’s parents die in a mysterious plane crash he calls Jennie, the girl who’d come to live with them after her own parents had tragically passed away years early. Returning to the home and the heartbreak she’d been carefully avoiding for years, proved to be harder than Jennie could ever imagine. Only to be made harder when weird ‘accidents’ began happening around them.
While Jared and Jennie try to fight their feelings towards each other, feelings they’d both promised they’d buried years ago, they are forced to stand together to try to solve the mystery of who is trying to kill them and take their newly inherited ranch from them. And just as importantly why.
Jane Hunt did a marvelous job of keeping me on the edge of the seat with twists and turns all the while making you root for the characters you can’t help but to fall in love with.
