Review

'The romance that develops during the ensuing scramble won t disappoint Barton's devotees, who will be happy to find her usual blend of passion and peril heavy on the passion.' --Publishers Weekly on 'A Time To Die'

About the Author

Movies fascinated Beverly Barton from an early age, and by the time she was seven she was rewriting the movies she saw to give them all happy endings. After her marriage and the births of her children, Beverly continued to be a voracious reader and a devoted movie goer, but she put her writing aspirations on hold. Now, after writing over 70 books, receiving numerous awards and becoming a New York Times bestselling author, Beverly's career became her dream come true.

I have to say I am very disappointed in this novel. Beverly Barton has previously put out some great novels, but this one, in my opinion, is not. The dialogue is unrealistic and it's level of believability is very low. The characters do not jibe with who they are, ie) the former Seal, Domingo Shea is unable to stop Laussanne Raney's attacker from leaving her hotel room..."the guy rushed past him and Audrey and ran straight for the open door". A perpetrator within arms reach of a former Navy Seal and he cannot stop him? Nor does Shea even attempt to chase him? This is only one discrepancy in a multitude found in this book. The writing, I'm sorry to say, is almost amateur and the plot flimsy. The characters are weak. It was difficult not to roll my eyes as I attempted to get through each page. This would have been acceptable as a first novel for a new writer, but for a seasoned professional it was a real let down. I'll continue to read Beverly's books as she has put out some wonderful novels, but I would not recommend this book to anyone.

I was looking for a new author in the crime/thriller genre and came across this book in Waterstones; the synopsis sounded good so I bought it. I won't go into the story as you've probably read the decsription.

The story started off promising but went through a rapid downward spiral. I don't mind a bit of romance and sex but this was so nauseating and sickly. I cringed at the characters; the lead hero was depicted as overly masculine and dominating, a man beating his chest comes to mind. The lead heroine initially came across as strong but Ms Barton managed to reduce her character to a weak, fragile little girl. Perhaps this is only my perception of the characteres but I do loath the typical protrayal of the sexes especially where the man is forever carrying the woman: just think "I Tarzan, you Jane".

The concept of the story is good (hence the two star) but unfortunately the read was poor, there wasn't much action, suspense anything similar to distinguish it as a thriller/suspense book. I guess you could say it was very amateurish. Sorry Ms Barton, just not my cup of tea...

Classic Barton. Well thought out, great believable characters and good twists and turns. Page turner. Would recommend. I'm moving on to another Barton book now.

I chose this rating because it deserved it. Barton has done it again, this book was a good mixture of a brilliant crime and tender romance.

Predictable, and since I can't really remember much about it, it is therefore unmemorable, wouldn't recommend but I wouldn't not mention it
