Product description

Product Description

In the year 1864, Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) requests an assignment to a remote outpost in the American West. Spending a lot of time by himself, Dunbar falls in love with the frontier, and becomes firm friends with the local Lakota Indians. Before long he finds himself contravening direct orders when he helps his new friends in their battle against the Pawnee. This revisionist western won seven Oscars, including one for Best Picture and one for Costner's direction.

From Amazon.co.uk

Dances with Wolves is the film that sent director-producer-actor Kevin Costner on his hubristic way; yet it is such a resonant and powerful film that we can almost forgive him for inflicting upon us his later "epic" The Postman. Here Costner plays a Union solder stationed at the far edges of the West, and left there to rot at his post. He finally sees the wisdom of the Lakota Sioux and finds peace within their community. But his decision to "go native" is greatly frowned upon by his military commanders, and the subsequent culture clash forms the backbone of the narrative. The story is told simply, and wastes not one word of dialogue, while the South Dakota locations provide a magnificent backdrop. Costner is sympathetic and accessible as an American Everyman who awakens to himself and the world around him... --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Loved this version - the original theatrical version was okay but this one was even better. Costner uses the extra time to develop the Native American characters a lot more than what is seen in the original and they become real people each with their own personalities. This creates a more rounded film - the Native American tribe become a more active central part rather than pushed to the periphery; to be talked about.
"Dances with Wolves" interestingly gives the colonisation history that indigenous peoples worldwide still have to grapple with and are still living with the consequences of that legacy today.
Even the German packaging is not a barrier to this monolingual English speaker (Amazon UK's directions to change over to English audio is straightforward).
There are a few Costner-starring films that I personally like from fun to political: Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves, Waterworld (still good despite budget blow-out), JFK, 13 Days; but "Dances with Wolves" was the one that first got the attention of the movie-going audience. See this film to find out why.

Hadn't seen this fine film in about 7-8 years at least, and enjoyed it as much as the first time I saw it. Some so good acting in it, top script and great cinematography. Recommended for all ages 10-100!
