Product Description

(Lloyd Webber). Bernadette Peters.

Amazon.co.uk

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance is a combination of his 1979 Paganini variations for cello and rock band with a 1980 one-woman television piece called Tell Me on a Sunday, which featured lyrics by Don Black. In 1985, Song and Dance was reconceived by Richard Maltby Jr. and debuted on Broadway, which led to this recording of the first half of the show, Song and Dance: The Songs. In the role of Emma, a British girl exploring a new life and new relationships in New York and Los Angeles, Bernadette Peters always keeps things interesting, but the one-woman-show concept probably works better visually, and some of the themes and catch phrases become repetitive. Better to skip past the book numbers and simply enjoy some of Lloyd Webber's tastiest songs: "Tell Me on a Sunday," "Take That Look off Your Face," "Come Back with That Same Look in Your Eyes," and the gorgeous "Unexpected Song." --David Horiuchi

3.0 out of 5 stars Bernadette Peters in her Tony-winning performance 3 Mar. 2004
By Byron Kolln - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
SONG AND DANCE earned Bernadette Peters the first of two Tony Awards. The musical SONG AND DANCE is actually two different programs - 'Tell Me on a Sunday' and the dance piece 'Variations'. 'Tell Me on a Sunday' is the story of an English hat designer Emma who follows her American boyfriend back to the states, only to discover heartache and unhappiness. 'Tell Me on a Sunday' was originally an album of songs performed by Marti Webb, later expanded into the stage show SONG AND DANCE in the double-bill with 'Variations'.

Bernadette Peters perfectly inhabits the character of Emma, and while her English accent occasionally falters, she conveys the rollercoaster of Emma's emotions beautifully. Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Don Black's incisive and entertaining score includes numbers that have become standards like "Take That Look Off Your Face", "Unexpected Song" and "Tell Me on a Sunday".

Even more beautiful is the haunting "Nothing Like You've Ever Known". There are also great character pieces like "Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad", "English Girls" and the "Letter" songs.

As several other reviewers have noted, sound quality is dreadfully muffled, but this is overshadowed by the tour-de-force performance of the amazing Miss Bernadette Peters.
5.0 out of 5 stars Bernadette Peters and Andrew Lloyd Weber - How Could it Get Much Better ????? 14 July 2013

I had this on vinyl "back in the day" and 'Unexpected Song' can still give me chills after 20 or so years.
I had ordered "Into The Wods" on DVD for a Godson (GrandGodson, acually - I am his GodFather's GodFather.)
Had never seen the stage show but had the album, which is a wonder on it's own.
The DVD was a recording (done well) of The Broadway show - Stephen Sondhein, Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, and Chip Zien lead an incredible ensemble, Rapunzel and the Gent. who played The Wolf for Red Riding Hood AND Prince Charming (Cinderella's) is also outstanding, plus the narrator whom they all get tired of and feed to a giant. Led me back to her and the memory of SONG AND DANCE........
THIS product - the songs tell the whole story, some humorous, some heart-wrenching, and Ms. Peters gives all of them top-notch performance. 10,000 stars and just buy it. You won't be wishing you hadn't. : )

2.0 out of 5 stars Awesome voice, lousy recording 21 Jan. 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Ms. Peters has never been in better voice. Evokes all the right nuances and emotion, from giddy to heartbreaking. The problem is that every high breaks, every low muffled. A sublime performence is undermined by lousy recording and worse transfer. It sounded pretty bad on vinyl, I had hoped the CD mastering would be a correction. I was wrong, and the music was wronged.
4.0 out of 5 stars Clearing confusion... 31 Jan. 2016

This was a masterful performance in a show that just didn't gain a paying audience. A dearly departed friend took me to see Song & Dance on a Friday night in New York. Already a fan of Ms. Peters, I knew I was in for a treat. An usher told us at intermission that the show wasn't selling very well and they didn't understand why people weren't attending. But those of us who did attend were thrilled by the show from start to finish. I understand the disappointment from some listeners of this cast recording because they may have been expecting a more polished studio recording. But sweetie, this is Broadway. This is a true cast recording. Please don't confuse soundtracks with cast albums. Truly devoted fans of the theater want to be reminded of the experience we got in the theater, not an augmented studio arrangement of the work that was WRITTEN for the stage. This is one reason that Jerry Herman's shows don't transfer to film all that well. They were written for live audiences to witness. Please try to keep that in mind when expecting a cast recording to sound slick and polished. Ms. Peters and the entire cast (though not represented here) gave a spectacular performance eight times a week. As the show was re-written for the New York transfer, many changes were made, not all of them good. May I recommend purchasing the London Cast Recording of Song & Dance as Marti Webb and Wayne Sleep give everything to the Lloyd Webber piece. While Ms. Webb isn't the finest singer to come from England, she does a fine job landing the jokes in the score and we even get to hear the audiences rave about Wayne Sleep's performance since this recording was entirely live. A revival of Song & Dance would be an amazing event since the success of dance competition television shows have given rise to the incredible talent in the field. Although this show is a star vehicle, let it be said that casting one of todays "pop tarts" would be a terrible misstep. God help us if Britney Spears or Iggy Azalea were hired to mount this! All in all, the recording presented here is exactly what we were given in the theater and for that I am most grateful. Thank you Bernadette for delivering a quality evening for us all.
