Damsel Paperback – 1 Mar. 2009

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

The dragon roared and the clearing filled with shining whiteness. The flames burned with the pure deadly brightness that can only come from dragon fire. Annie closed her eyes but the scene imprinted on her vision; The knight tall and proud with his sword raised high and the dragon on her haunches, wings spread wide above them. When she opened her eyes all that was left of him was red hot armor glowing on the ground and a skittish grey mare neighing in panic. Can a damsel ever be the one to do the rescuing? Annie Brave thinks so. Her father, one of the most famous heroes of them all, is missing, presumed eaten. With no heroes available to rescue him from the clutches of the evil wizard, Greenlott, Annie takes his book "How to Slay Dragons - and Other Advice for the Hero in Training" and sets off on a rescue mission.Teaming up with Roger of Rockfield, an honorable liar, she embarks on a series of adventures which are far from traditional. Whether these adventures involve Annie saving Roger from giant spiders or Annie and Roger dealing with the amorous advances of a prince frog (not to be confused with a frog prince) every incident leads them further on a voyage of self-discovery they never intended to make.

I picked up this book a little while ago in hard copy for my niece as part of her Christmas present. She's 8 and her mum tells me she absolutely loves it. Her brother, who is just turning 6, is asking for it to be read at bedtime too.

It's a great story about a young girl whose dad runs a knight school, who then gets kidnapped by a dragon and she has to rescue him. In a classic quest narrative, she meets a cast of different characters along the way, overcomes obstacles and learns some important lessons.

It's well written, with a great sense of humour and an eye for the pithy detail. The language is accessible for pre-teens and the chapter are a perfect length for readers of its target market

This is a fun fantasy with elements of danger and magic. A girl called Annie hears that her father has been captured by a wizard and she takes up the book on questing her father had been writing, because she may be just a young damsel but there is no-one else to send.
On the journey with her pony and dog, Annie evades a troll under a bridge and is pleased with herself when she hears screaming from woods and hurries to rescue a boy called Roger from a giant spider. There is advice on lots of things in the book so the two of them think they will manage, until they see the dragon guarding the road to the wizard's castle....
What with a Prince of Frogs and other misadventures, the pair of them might never reach the castle, and if they do they still have to find Annie's father and then get out alive...
There are great drawings to illustrate the adventure and a very nice atmosphere conjured up by everything from stinking spider goo to sweet wild mint. This will be good for pre-teens, either girls or boys.

Loved it. This was a wonderful middle-grade fantasy novel with plenty of wit and charm to go around. Connolly is a very talented writer and I certainly hope to see more from her in the future. I agree with a previous reviewer that the book would have been even better had it been illustrated (even just chapter plates would have made all the difference), but it's still lovely on its own.

I have been reading different age groups lately. This is a great book. It fits its age group well, but would be fun for any age group. I ordered a copy form a book store in Ireland (Tartan Frog). It shipped in less than half the time projected.
