I'd seen the review that gave it one star, but the trailer didn't look TOO bad so i brought it cheap and gave it a go.
Ok it a low budget Australian horror, the effects are dated, the movie REALLY should of been set in Ireland BUT...It's not actually THAT bad. Certainly no worse than a lot of the trash that comes out of Hollywood.
There are not many movies that have used a Banshee as it's antagonist, and there's also other undead featured. Zombies, skeletons, spectres. The setting is remote and eiree, but the fog machine is on overdrive in places. Not much in the way of gore, or major shocks but it is creepy, and does at least retain an atmoshpere of tension. Overall a bit 'home and away' in the acting department but entertaining enough for a few quid.

Damned By Dawn [DVD]: Ok, how do I put this the right way. This film I must admit was a bit cheesy, but it was a good sort of cheesy. A low budget Australian back movie. They seemed to be good friends with the fog making machine, sometimes you couldn't even see what was going on. The girl playing the banshee was amazing, the cold stare and screaming mouth. Overall, I quite liked it, I was gripped and quite frightened in places, some gore and guts but not too much, and the scream of the banshee was excellently chilling. One to watch - but I warn you its not an A list movie x x x

I was some way into this when I realised I had already seen it masquerading as Cry of the Banshee. Actually, I liked it more now Dawn was damning me. I think Dawn was the nice old dear with the prune-like visage who... well I won't give the plot away. The Banshee was a most impressive creation and quite eerie but she clearly ate up the special effects budget because some of the other effects were ghost train standard and the mist machine was on its last gasp. What elevated it was the impression of genuine fear exhibited by the girls, which made you rethink whether to laugh it off. I'd be interested to see what the director does with a decent budget, but looking at his credits on IMDB, I think it will be a long time before he saves up the readies.

I thought that this was quite a good film. I liked the subject matter ( not many Banshee films about.) I did, however think that it lost its way a bit, towards the end. What I really liked was the "making of -" in the bonus material. The makers and actors looked as if they were having a great time making this film with very little money. It was full marks for this Ausie team for getting the finished film to the quality that was presented. If I'd made a film like this, with the resorces that they had, I would have been pleased with the result.

'Damned By Dawn' is an Australian horror film about a family who live in a house in the middle of nowhere which is homed to the undead. Then one night the dead come back to life to haunt and kill the family. This is quite a low budget film but the special effects and acting were quite good. The reason I have given it 2 stars is because the storyline is predictable, cheap and too silly for words. Most of the film just consisted of the characters running around the house and outside from the undead which got boring after a while and there wasn't no point to the story. Also the loud screaming noise which the undead female thing kept making had me bursting in laughter at the end. The 2 stars is maybe a little harsh but the storyline is just too silly and laughable for this to be a horror film.

One factor for any good horror movie is that is must be atmospheric. However, the makers of Damned by Dawn take the word `atmospheric' to mean `foggy.'

The film is about a young couple who return to their family home in the foggiest part of Australia to see a dying relative. However, a banshee pops out of the fog and causes brutal havoc.

Now, I read some of the other reviews before I watched this and, I have to say, they kind of lower your expectations. But, for the first third of the movie, I had to wonder whether they were talking about the same film. I thought it was actually quite good. It had a nice (foggy) set-up and some potential.

Then came the CGI. Not only are CGI baddies imposed on us, but also, if the cast happen to be running through a non-foggy area, CGI fog is added (and it's really bad CGI fog too!).

The one dimensional characters just about manage to act their parts and the banshee's screaming is pretty creepy, plus there's some good gore (when you can see it through the fog), but, overall, I found myself eventually agreeing with the other reviews.

It may not be the worst film ever made (not while Michael Bay's Transformers franchise is still on a roll), but it's definitely not the best. Unless it happens to be on and you feel like a so-so horror flick, don't bother paying to watch this.
