From the Manufacturer
The Legend of the Brave
In 1263, the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie bravely saved King Alexander III of Scotland from the fury of a charging stag. At The Dalmore, we believe that ‘fortune favours the brave’ and this proved to be true for the Clan Mackenzie, who were given three rewards by the grateful King – the right to use the a 12-pointed Royal Stag in their coat of arms, the motto ‘Luceo Non Uro’ and the lands of Kintail. When descendants of the Clan Mackenzie were chosen to take over The Dalmore distillery in 1867, they brought with them the iconic 12-pointed Royal Stag, and it has adorned every bottle of The Dalmore since, in honour of our regal heritage.
The Art of The Dalmore
At The Dalmore, we believe that true excellence in whisky making, like great art, can be achieved only by a few. Our eight idiosyncratic stills create a spirit unrivalled in its richness and complexity. Its true potential is realised through maturation in only the finest casks; many available only to The Dalmore and hand-selected by our Master Distiller Richard Paterson.
The Dalmore 12 year old, with its intricate aromas and flavours, is recognised as a whisky with character far beyond its age. This was Andrew Mackenzie’s original masterpiece and stood apart from the norm of the day. At a time when it was standard practise to mature whisky for no more than 6 years, Andrew Mackenzie demonstrated his pioneering character by doubling the maturation period. His boldness truly paid off, The Dalmore 12 year old still stands apart as an exceptional whisky today, as it did then.
The Dalmore’s Royal heritage has inspired generations of whisky makers at its Highland distillery, all of whom - in their own way - have redefined the whisky industry.
A Unique Still House
The Dalmore’s unique configuration of stills create a unique, full bodied and complex new make spirit. The complexity of this spirit enables it to be matured like no other.
The Dalmore has had a relationship with the renowned Gonzalez Byass bodega for over 100 years. As a result The Dalmore ensures an exclusive supply of the very best casks, hand-selected to the exact specification of our Master Distiller.

The downside was the packing - the Christmas bottle was beautifully packed with a strong extra box filled with an air-filled sleeve. The second one had a normal Amazon box and no protection so the box inside was damaged - not good, especially for a present.
Aged in ex-bourbon casks for most of the 12 year period and then half is matured for a finishing period in ex-sherry casks, it is then brought back together at 12 years of age to create this superb single malt. Before i talk about my tasting notes i want to say a little about the box which is of quality construction and looks ideal for presentation purposes but also aids in protecting the valuable bottle. The bottle is a standard size 70cl(750ml) bottle and features a cork stopper (always adds a touch of class) and a plastic but highly effective stag on the front which is the emblem of the Dalmore brand. This Whisky is bottled at 40% and has been chill-filtered. It does not state whether or not it is the natural colour or whether colourant has been added!
Tasting notes based on the last bottle i purchased in July 2013 which was bottled in December 2012:
NOSE Before Water: Overall quite sweet on the nose with warm spice and white pepper with a small hint of raisins. With a few drops of Water added : you get added dried fruits and eventually chocolate
TASTE Neat: Strong spice, vanilla and chocolate.Read more ›
Sherry, oak and a touch of toffee make this an ideal sipping malt
