The first single by Martin Grech -- who's music is used on the Lexus TV advert. The music on that advert is a song called 'Open Heart Zoo' and is the title track of the album by the same name which will be released on 8th July.
The first track on this single, 'Dali', is an unusual mix of styles and possible influences, from the distorted riffs of guitar driven rock (Soundgarden?), through dreamlike soundscapes which would work wonderfully as a film soundtrack (Sigur Rós?), to a union of the two (Radiohead?, Bjork?). The vocal style will be recognized from the Lexus advert, Martin vocalizes on specific vowels with an occasional aspirate, he sweeps across a wide harmonic range (similar to Jeff Buckley?). It's hard to make out the words but this doesn't matter.
The second track, 'Catch Up', appears to take the melancholic, gentle sections of 'Dali' and extend them. Its recurring motifs and the doleful, minimalistic and perhaps naive structure makes for a beautiful piece of music. I was, at times, reminded of the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs by Gorecki.
I dropped one mark from my score because at times I felt that Martin's inventiveness came across as a little forced on 'Dali'. Still, this is a great debut and I look forward to the album.

Dali has to be one of my favourite songs off Open heart zoo! I really like the guitar sound. And the second song off this album makes it totally worth buying. I like both of those songs. Although you the listener are entitles to think what you like. But I myself honestly think they are 2 really good tracks!!

This, the first release by the hotly tipped 19 year old singer/songwriter best known for the haunting music for the Lexus car ad, is something of a mixed bag.
Perhaps the main problem lies in the obviousness of his influences. "Dali" is Muse covering Radiohead's Paranoid Android. "Catch Up" is Hats period Blue Nile. If I'd never heard any of these people I'd be enormously excited and slathering all over my keyboard with an undoubted 5 star review.
It's, perhaps, a little unfair to expect so young an artist to arrive fully formed having found his own unique voice. In fact it's virtually impossible. What is here, though, is more than enough to warrant further exploration and I'll certainly be buying Open Heart Zoo on release.

From the moment it begins to the moment it ends 'Dali' will blow your mind out the back of your head, wrap it round your face and insert it back in through one eyesocket, leaving you dazed, amazed and utterly spent. Buy it. Now. Oh and 'catch up' is pretty good too.
