Whereas it can be argued whether Da 2nd Phaze is Wiley's second album or just a mixtape (It's highly regarded by the man himself and by fans as his second album) what is definite is that it is one of Wiley's best pieces of work.
Da 2nd Phaze saw Wiley come back after leaving XL (Something he discusses briefly in the Intro) as less friendly, more angry and definitely more grimey. The beats are much darker than his production on Treddin' on Thin Ice and the lyrics are a whole lot more aggressive.
Between the brags of stealing your girl, being angry, being in Roll Deep and being "confident with the flow" are the early signs of pure greatness that Wiley would later become in later efforts like Playtime is Over and Race Against Time.
Any Wiley fan who is aware of his whole catalogue of albums would easily see how Da 2nd Phaze was the transition from the Wiley on Treddin' on Thin Line to the Wiley on Playtime is Over (And not just because three songs on Da 2nd Phaze also appear on Playtime is Over).
Admittedly, there are a number of tracks that don't match up to the rest of the tracklist, but this is only because the album's highlights are of such a high quality.
In conclusion, this is one of Wiley's best albums, an essential in Wiley CD collection and definitely fits in with the rest of his albums. But there are not many physical copies available nowadays so I would advise to buy a copy whilst there are people still selling them...
