During each episode he gives his wry observations on the spy game (a broken home is a good training ground for a spy since you're used to getting knocked around and never get homesick) and demonstrates how to make practical use of those spy skills, be it making a decoy "bomb" that looks real but has no explosive, setting up a perimeter alarm with a floodlight and a mobile phone, or simply getting rid of the next door drug dealer. It's a bit like MacGyver but without the self-righteousness.
Westen is aided and abetted by ex-girlfriend Fiona - ex-IRA, bounty hunter, sexy as hell and hard as nails - and friend Sam Axe - (Bruce Campbell, brilliant as always) ex-spy with a penchant for sunbathing at a pool with a decent bar. Sam is working both sides, informing on Westen to the Feds and using this connection to set the Feds on bad guys Westen identifies during his work.Read more ›
There are many things to love about this series - the characters, the humour, the imaginative methods that our hero employs and the fact that you can't predict where the series will go. The writers have a great knack of constantly finding new twists and directions to take it.
Two things did annoy me at first - the irritating mother played by Sharon Gless and the most appalling Irish accent adopted by Gabrielle Anwar. Mercifully, the former soon mellowed considerably and the accent was dropped after the first episode in favour of a local one (for plot reasons).
Now I can't wait for Series 2 on DVD and it's great to hear that Series 3 has been commissioned.
So go on, do yourself a favour - take a chance on this series, especially now the price has dropped. You won't regret it!
Michael is determined to figure out who did this to him and why so he can get back to work. So while he slowly gathers pieces of that puzzle, he picks up odd jobs as a private investigator. When he needs back up (which is often), he teams up with ex-IRA weapons smuggler (and ex-girlfriend) Fiona (Gabriella Anwar) and friend and former FBI agent (who is reporting on him to the FBI) Sam (Bruce Campbell).
And together the three of them take on plenty of hard cases. They deal with kidnapped sons, drug dealers, smugglers, arms dealers, and assassins. Meanwhile, Michael is piecing together why he was burned. All this leads to a gripping and explosive season finale with a great cliffhanger.
I passed on this show originally, but based on the buzz gave it a chance. I'm glad I did. This show manages to fix suspense, action, and humor in the perfect dose. Michael, Fiona, and Sam have excellent chemistry, which makes their jokes better. And Michael's narration adds some fun, too.
But yes, this show is about the action. Every episode leaves me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how they will deal with the problem. There are lots of explosions and shooting. This is a show for those who love spy stories.
I will admit, the show took me a few episodes to fully appreciate.Read more ›
Set in Miami, with scantily clad females in abundance. Strengths include Jeffrey Donovan as the discarded agent. Interestingly he reveals the tricks of his trade. Enjoyably he outwits villains, despatching some quite spectacularly.
Such assets, though, compete with much that is superficial and irritating. This includes those closest to Michael - the posturing ex-girlfriend Fiona, gorging mate Sam, chainsmoking mother obsessed with her health.
For many, BURN NOTICE has proved addictive. Their reviews tempted me to buy. I wanted to like it but, sadly, the show does not work for me. Do not let that put you off! The series has run into several seasons, I clearly unable to appreciate what others enjoy so much.

Loved this show the first time around and it's just as fun today. HD looks mostly pretty good, some low light shots are grainy and barely look HD but all in all worth a purchase.Published 11 months ago by Richie Rich
