The book is a great guide to Amsterdam in terms of historical references and infomation about places However, if you are looking for a travel guide i.e. something that will help you select the best sites for a 2-3-4 day visit and guide you through those, then this is perhaps not the guide of choice.
I enjoyed reading the book, but had to refer to another travel guide for hour by hour planning during my trip.

As other reviewers have said, this is not the guide that will tell you the best way to spend a 2 or 3 day visit. Yes it does include a section entitled "Four Great Days out in Amsterdam" but one of those is just for children, another just relates to markets including the one at Waterlooplein which isn't really worth the trek. The restaurant guide on the other hand was very useful - particularly the one star list. But perhaps more one star restaurants would have been useful, there being too much emphasis on 2 star and above. The general guide was also good - as I have come to expect of these DK Guides - but it was an added complication that the publishers decided to use English names for some of the sections on the districts, whereas the text (and every other map etc you read in the City) used the Dutch name eg The Jordaan became The Western Canal Ring.

My husband and I only buy Eyewitness guides....and the reason why is that they always produce and this one is no different. We like the pictures and explanations. We used it to plan out 3 fantastic days in such a beautiful city. The only slight downfall would be the tram map...it is very tiny to read...just get one from the central station info centre.
Great guide, very informative and we found no incorrect information as other reviews have suggested.
Enjoy your trip!

This was a great source of information for someone who has never been to Amsterdam before. The maps were really helpful too! Just bare in mind that this guide is on the heavy side - much heavier than other DK travel guides. This was a bit of a pain considering I was landed with it in my bag.

I only gave it a 4 because it was very light on kids stuff. I know it is a city guide but I'm sure there's more than 2 pages worth of content on that topic. Otherwise, a great book.

For the record, if anyone with young kids in interested, I'd recommend taking or hiring bikes and heading into the Vondelpark - good playgrounds and big paddling pool in middle. Also there's a good open space with outdoor cafe between the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, where they can run off steam. Also, if you have a car, a trip to one of the North Sea beaches is a good day out.

It is definitely not out of date as other reviewers have mentioned. I don't know what the problem was in previous editions but the edition of 2011 is updated perfectly. Just as all the other eyewitness travel guides, it is also well organized, very good quality and all you need while traveling to Amsterdam. What I also liked about it is it includes other small cities around Amsterdam such as Haague, Utrecht and others. So while I travel to Haague I don't need to buy some other book for that. Good value of money indeed.

I got this about 4 weeks before going to Amsterdam and read it through.
It helped me plan our 3 night stay. We bought an "I Amsterdam ' card for free travel and entry to everything but Ann franks huis and we hammered it. We were at loads of places. The book tells you opening times etc of the attractions. Amsterdam is brilliant and for a city break I prefer this guide to 'lonely planets'.

We have used Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Guides for quite a few years now. Therefore when we were planning a trip to Holland it was appropriate to buy this book.
It did not disappoint, excellent city walk x 2, good recommendations on eating places (Sea Palace floating Chinese restaurant excellent), good details on getting around and what to see.Recommended without hesitation.
