Setup is a cinch. You just plug it in, load your chosen method of display (USB or SD) and switch it on. The manual is easy to follow and quite comprehensive, instructing you on how to set the time and date, although I did that without the manual which shows how simple it is. If you want to, you can play your music through the frame via your USB or SD. All of the controls are around the back but easily used without having to search for them or look at what you're doing. The (included) remote control works like a dream from all angles. There are several ways to change the photos from fade, to rotate and everything in between. Oh, and it's really light to hold as well. The screen is a little over 10" and the resolution is 1024x768 so you get really crisp and clear pictures.
Its selling point for me was its usability. I have a ton of photos on my hard drive that I never seem to look at these days but now I intend transferring them to two SD cards (one for use, one for back up) and clear a bit of space on my drive. I might even make a sound file to go with the pictures.
I can recommend this photo frame to everyone who, like me has a stack of digital photos that they never look at because, as you know, when you sit at your computer, you find a thousand other things to do there that stop you from reliving happy times.
This pure frame by DB Power has a very nice large screen and I was initially excited about it as I've been after one for ages. The remote control was also promising addition to the bundle however I don't think that the picture frame lied p to my expectations. The box comes with the frame, power cable, a detachable rear stand, the remote control (with batteries) and instructions. The stand was very easy to fit which was achieved by twisting on a plastic bar and allowed the frame to stand horizontally and was fairly secure. There are several buttons on top that allow you to navigate the menu without the remote however using the remote is far easier.
On the main menu, you can;
1) set the time
2) set an alarm
3) set when the frame turns on and off (as well as if you want this daily, once only or turn this function off
4) set what mode to enable when the frame is turned on - e.g. Photo only, music and photo, video
5) transition select between photos
The auto on/off is a very nice feature and allows you to save on electricity as you only really want it on when you're home.
One thing to note is that the frame is very inflexible to what type of music format it recognises and plays. It will only play mp3 or wma files and did not recognise the mp4 files from my ITunes music collection. Although the video formats play MPEG 1,2,4 and avi, I had no luck playing any videos made on my Panasonic Lumix as they were not recognised.
I found that when I set the frame to play music and photos, it always played both the musicals photos in the same order which became tedious after a while. I had hoped that there was a function to play at least the photos in random order but unfortunately there isn't. The viewing angle is ok and picture quality was clear with the option to adjust brightness, contrast and saturation from the main menu. You can use the remote to turn it on and off as well as skip or review photos and the range is ok for the average room however you need to directly in front of the frame for it to respond.
I also wish that there was something incorporated on the back of the frame to hold the remote though so that it doesn't get lost as it is quite wee.
All in all a reasonably nice frame however the music format is limited and the photos always play in the same order. If you plan on using this to play videos as well, make sure the formats suit your needs. Given the fairly high price tag I expected a little more but it's still pretty nice.
Power on and off timer; brightness, contrast, and saturation picture controls; clock, calendar, alarm, and timer.
It has 3 display modes which can be changed every 3, 5, or 15 seconds; 1 or 15 minutes; or 1 hour:
a. Cinema (which is basically portrait mode),
b. Stretched (which elongates the picture laterally), and
c. Crop which adds bars around the photo- the user can experiment with to get a preferred mode. There are multiple sequential picture transition options: my favorite is "door open".
Although there are warnings about the picture frame edges getting hot, I found by purposefully stressing the unit with hours of continuous operation and going through the entire photo slide show at 3 seconds per clip, over and over, that neither the plastic clear outer area nor the back plastic area that contains the electronics even got warm during that entire time. The screen itself does get somewhat warm and should not be touched. But this test was conducted using 120 volt /60 Htz USA power and a UK to USA plug adapter, so UK heat results may vary. The main concern was about someone letting it run for extended periods of time, and that does not seem to be a problem, although it should be turned off when unattended. The unit comes in a box with French written on all sides, but English instructions are contained within, and although not in perfect English it is accurate and specific enough to allow the user to get the unit quickly into operation and to quickly learn how to handle operation very intuitively from that point on. The main point is to get the power requirements right and to use .JPEG, .MPEG, and .MP3 files, because files such as ".png" files did not display on this particular picture frame.
Cons: the remote must be held close to the frame's bottom center hole to key in the commands.
Highly Recommended. Five PICTURESQUE Stars. (1 each Digital Picture Frame, remote control, `kick stand', 5 foot UK power supply, and operating manual. This product was provided by the manufacturer for an impartial review.)
