Great read if you persevere

Started like a rather glib, facile spy tale, almost a spoof, and then it took off - a great read.
Difficult to say much about it, without risking spoilers, but the writing is very good and the characterisation, especially Leo, is excellent - really felt for Leo, an honest, straight up guy, seeking justice, freedom and a quiet life, in a nasty, twisted world which will not let him have them.
Highly recommended (but persevere through the early chapters) and I will look out for more by Mr Brierley.

I really enjoyed this book, but as someone who lived through the period, I spent more time trying to glean clues to the date it was set in(digital watches, so post 1970, pre Berlin Wall etc etc) which spoiled my enjoyment overall. Is it so hard to put Spring 1982 somewhere??

This novel powerfully conveys the suspicions & fears shrouding the Cold War era. The story weaves together the travails of a Czech who works for the British secret service when he acts as a lone wolf by returning to his homeland for his mother's funeral, with that of his spy masters who struggle to contain his activities. There are twists and turns to maintain the pace of the tale with the added sweetener of a love story. I just wonder would it have been that easy to be smuggled out of a lorry in a secret compartment.

This leads to a complex tale of his origins, misunderstandings, suspicion, .treachery, and his bumbling escapes from danger murder and assassination before he realises the spiders web of deceit and treachery into which he had inadvertently stumbled. He survives to fight another day to be revealed in the next installment

I thought this was a real page-turner. Full of intrigue, at a local, human level, and on a grander scale with the cold war raging hot in the background. The author marries the complexities of both to make this a compelling read.
