Product Description

A QUINTESSENTIALLY FRENCH BLEND OF LYRICISM, EXOTICISM AND DRAMA Les Pêcheurs de Perles is best known for its glorious duet, but Georges Bizets opera has much more to offer. This live recording more than ever brings out the brilliance of this oriental story about love, duty and friendship. In the last 150 years, Bizets piece has mainly been heard in editions that stray from the composers original composition.

This album on the contrary - offers the first recording in history of the 1863 premiere version, reconstructed and published by Bärenreiter in 2015. Les Pêcheurs de perles contains a quintessentially French blend of lyricism, exoticism and drama, and the four soloists (Julie Fuchs as Leïla, Cyrille Dubois as Nadir, Florian Sempey as Zurga and Luc Bertin-Hugault as Nourabad) belong to todays best performers for this specialist repertoire. Their vocal excellence is matched by the choral contributions of Les Cris de Paris. The rich sound palette of Les Pêcheurs is fully brought to life by the inspired playing of the Orchestre National de Lille under the baton of its new Music Director Alexandre Bloch.

Review

The critic of Le Figaro was particularly cutting after the first night of Les Pecheurs de Perles in 1863: There were neither fishermen in the libretto, nor pearls in the music, he wrote. Berlioz, however, was kinder, particularly about Bizet's music, and he was right. As Alexandre Bloch and the Orchestre National de Lille remind us, this is a magnificent score that blends the exotic, the dramatic and the lyrical. This is also the first ever recording of the premiere version of the opera, edited and reconstructed by Hugh Macdonald for the publishers Barenreiter in 2015. The libretto may still creak the great duet for tenor and baritone Au fond du temple saint' comes much too early and the final act is hurriedly melodramatic; but the Act II duet for the priestess Leila and Nadir is masterly. And Cyrille Dubois and Julie Fuchs, who belong to a new generation of French singers, make the most of it. Dubois is distinctly French in the timbre of his voice and his singing style, and if Fuchs tends to spread under pressure she is lyrical when required and her coloratura is formidable. Whether either singer really inhabits their character is another matter. So often that is the problem with concert performances. If Florian Sempey is a disappointing Zurga with gritty tone and a tendency to bark, the vocal honours really belong to the chorus, Les Cris de Paris. Here's committed singing that reminds us that Bizet's story is not just about passion andjealousy but also about a community clinging to the shoreline in search of a perilous and uncertain livelihood. Here are the fishermen and the pearls. Christopher Cook.PERFORMANCE ****/RECORDING **** --BBC Music Magazine

Bizet's Les pe cheurs de perles also crops up in a less familiar version, as we are used to hearing music that was nipped and tucked many times for about 30 years following the 1863 premiere. The original autograph score has disappeared into a private collection, so the reconstructed version (by Hugh Macdonald, 2014) is as good as it's going to get for now. Consequently, opera's prime example of premature ejaculation, the famous duet for tenor and baritone (after which many audiences sadly realise the peak has already been reached early in the evening), veers off midstream in a completely unexpected direction. This recording is live, from concerts in Lille last year, and is hugely idiomatic, with French soloists, conductor, orchestra and chorus. Alexandre Bloch obviously enjoys Bizet's exotic colours and keeps very tight control of his excellent forces, things never become blowsy. Julie Fuchs is a delicious Leila, with a pure, almost crystalline soprano, and deft passagework. Florian Sempey has good weight and tone of voice for Zurga. Perhaps best of all is Cyrille Dubois as Nadir, with his fabulous voix mixte and ability to caress the line, recalling a type of French tenor that has hardly flourished in abundance since the late Alain Vanzo. --Classical Music Magazine
