About the Author

Jules Selmes has been passionate about cycling ever since he got his first bike, a MK1 Raleigh Chopper in 1971. Over the following years he has owned many bikes including BMX, road and mountain bikes. When his family immigrated to South Africa in 1972, he progressed to a Peugeot road bike which survived many day trips across the savannah and even the odd homemade ramp. He returned to the UK in 1979, but did not start riding again until 1984 while studying in Oxford. On moving to London in 1990, he joined the Thames Tradesman Cycling Racing Club where he raced in national mountain bike series and trained on the streets of London. While living in various parts of London he went everywhere on his bike and supported the LCC by supplying professional photography free of charge.

Bought this for my cycling enthusiast partner. Most routes in the book are very short so great if you want a bimble about or family bike rides whilst discovering parts of london you may not otherwise see, but not so good if you're looking for long/endurance bike rides. Depends what you're looking for. Route descriptions should be supplemented with another map. Expect to get a bit lost at times, but that's the best bit isn't it? :)

As a frequent vistor to London I was keen to see more than the usual tourist areas. A friend bought this book for me for my birthday and although at first I was hesitant to get out and about on a bicycle in such a busy city, I was surprised at how enjoyable the experience has been so far. I have only tackled three of the routes, and although at first glance the maps and directions can appear a little complicated, they are in fact very concise and well-written. As the author suggests, it is wise to use this book in conjunction with a large scale map (common sense with any book like this I would say) and also thoroughly read through the route before setting off.
This book certainly will give any budding explorer the chance to see London from a different perspective. I'm very much looking forward to trying out the rest of the routes.

The photography is excellent - shame the images couldn't be bigger. It looks like it has been thoroughly researched. Thank you very much, we are working our way through it slowly!
