About the author

Rob Lilwall was born in London, and worked as a salesman and a geography high school teacher before setting off on his big journeys. He lived in Hong Kong from 2010-2021 and he since then has been based in Singapore.
His first two big adventures (the subject of his first two books) were cycling over 35,000 miles from Far Eastern Siberia to London via Papua New Guinea, Australia, Tibet and Afghanistan (Cycling Home From Siberia), and walking over 3,000 miles from the Gobi Desert to Hong Kong, via China (Walking Home From Mongolia). His undocumented adventures include cycling across Ethiopia, the Andes Mountains, and the Karakorum Mountains; walking across Andalucía, a lap of the M25 motorway, and from the Golan Heights to Masada; canoeing down the Thames, and floating down the Severn on a homemade raft.
In 2015 he rode a tandem bicycle from LA to New York with his wife Christine. In 2016 he attempted to walk across the Desert of Death in China. This latest expedition went wrong in numerous ways, and is the subject of a forthcoming book, due out in 2023.
Since 2010 he has lived in Hong Kong where he is a freelance TV adventurer, writer, and motivational speaker. He has written over 40 freelance pieces for the South China Morning Post. Together with his wife Christine, he is the joint National Director for the Hong Kong mobilization office of the International children's charity Viva.
Rob has also filmed and presented two National Geographic TV series, and he is now an acclaimed Singapore-based motivational/inspirational speaker for corporates. In his speeches, Rob reflects on the mindsets that have helped him overcome obstacles, persevere and develop new abilities on the way. He helps his audiences to develop a growth mindset and to become more agile, collaborative and resilient.
Rob's presentation was very inspirational. His stories about his growth journey and how he dealt and embrace change was something ouåçr associates could all relate to. If you are looking to provide your audience a different perspective through storytelling, reach out to Rob.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2013I have just finished this book having read it over a 2 week period travelling to work. I found it inspirational, encouraging and personally challenging. Rob is very open about his feelings and it not macho in anyway. Some of his decisions were frankly bordering on crazy, such as cycling through Afghanistan and I raised my eyebrows at Iran. However, his experience of most of the countries is that the majority of people are warm, caring, friendly and helpful. He certainly rewrote some stereotypical thoughts I had in some areas and offered some insightful reflections on culture. The part of the west doing things as long as it doesn't harm others while Iran is more about damaging the spiritual made interesting reading.
The pace of this book is good in that it doesn't get bogged down in too much detail yet captures the essential parts of the trip. People are the main focus rather than simply the landscape or road he was travelling along which made it a very personal read. Meeting his wife must have been the icing on the cake for him.
A good read for a person who is into cycling, travelling or culture.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 January 2021Two and a half weeks ago, I had not heard of Rob Lilwall. Having seen and read his book “walking home from Mongolia”, I
and enjoyed the read, I decided to do this one too. This was a different read. Rob comes across as being a person who wants to “get” people. His interest in culture and religion is conveyed really well and it is clear he has a deep desire to get beneath the surface of what appearances are. Really enjoyed this book. Great adventure. Makes me want to ride somewhere! Very good, thanks for sharing your story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2013Rob Lilwall displays a unique mixture of courage, luck and humility in this amazing account of his circuitous journey from deepest frozen Siberia to the safety of his London home. He survives three years of extremes of weather and terrain, meeting a mixed bag of characters, and putting his trusty mountain bike to the ultimate consumer test. A remarkable account of an epic journey, well written and difficult to put down.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2010A really good book, easy to read and very informative. The short chapters makes this an easy book to read in short bursts.Mind you I find it hard to put down once I have my head in it.If the type face i.e. print would either be a bit stronger or larger it would be even more enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2019I enjoyed Rob's journey, I liked that he started in Siberia in the winter which seems mental, and turns out to be. I found after a while his writing is a bit lacking: he describes where he is, how far to the next place and his particular thoughts in that place without giving me the reader a particularly evocative sense of the people or the places.
This is one of the perils of buying a book by an amateur writer: having an experience and being able to write well about it are two separate things. Reading "One Man And His Bike" by Mike Carter really brought this point home to me: Carter's adventure is a lot more modest (he cycles around Britain), but the engagement you feel as a reader with the people and places he visits is much more tangible.
Overall I enjoyed the opening chapters more than the later ones. Rob's writing style is quite unobtrusive, which I mean as a positive in that some of these epic cycle journey books are so irritating that it's difficult to make it through. It's an easy read that allowed me to daydream about making my own epic bike journey one day.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 April 2019A well written tale of attention grabbing endurance, with many entrancing twists and turns. This is definitely one of those books that is very difficult to put down and pause for a break. A book one wants to share with others, and finishing the book leaves a vacuum.

Phil DReviewed in the United States on 6 October 20125.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, amusing, honest and real
As an active touring cyclist myself, and passionate cycle touring reader of many such books, I found Rob Lilwall's "Cycling Home from Siberia" a great read. Having read both of Alastair Humphrey's cycling stories (both excellent books in their own right), I was excited to discover Rob's book as Alastair had written about the time they had spent cycling together in Siberia and Japan and I was curious to see it from another perspective.
Cramming dozens of countries and tens of thousands of miles over three years into a book is no easy achivement. Such an undertaking means inevitably some sections of Rob's adventure get skipped over with very little coverage, if at all. This is disappointing, but entirely expected - or the book would be 1000+ pages long. This is no way takes away from the pleasure of reading Rob's book - I am certain all the main highlights of his trip are definitely included with plenty of minor stories along the way. I found myself thinking about the book at work and longing to return to my commute home in order to read more about Rob's account in Siberia, China, Papua New Guinea, Tibet, Afghanistan and Iran amongst the myriad of other places he traveled.
Rob provides great stories with real honesty of emotions of the fear and adrenalin from outrunning the rascals of Papua New Guinea, to evading border posts in Tibet and to being suspected as a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. All really entertaining stories in their own right, combined they make for truly enjoyable adventure reading.
Whilst always eager to read about life on the bike and camping roadside, the book's real value - and the way it differed from the many other such books came for me in three areas:
The first was Rob's transparent account of his Christian faith. All too often we find ourselves shying away from opening up about matters of the heart for fear of judgement from others, however Rob is candid in the way he explores his own faith in light of both his tough experiences on the road, and the religions of other people he meets. Rob is open enough to admit the challenges he has in his own beliefs and is willing to explore these relative to the other faiths he learns about in people along the road. His commitment to Christ throughout however is evident, both in the way he speaks of his faith and the way he acts as he travels.
The second was enjoying reading about the slow, mature development of his relationship with Christine who he meets in Hong Kong. The advertsity of a long-distance romance and infrequent contact - whilst Christine endures the corporate world in London and New York whilst Rob endures the long slow grind home through obscure countries of the world - is obvous. Watching a deep romance blossom added real colour to what is already a great read about the cycling and other adventures Rob was encountering along the way.
The third was seeing Rob's personal self-development as he traveled. He acknowledges the areas his character grows over the trip, yet at the same time admitting the areas he still has a long way to go even right up to the last days. Meeting so many different people and colourful personalities along the way is always going to stretch a person and Rob's growth along the way is clear. Having traveled in this manner myself for months on end, it was easy to relate to having people come and go from one's life so repetitively, as is Rob's not unreasonable frustration with having to reintroduce and re-explain his trip hundreds of times over. His responding in Uzbekistan to people's queries by reciting poetry in English was most amusing!
This great book had me hooked to the very end which seemed to come around way too quickly and was a fitting conclusion to a very significant trip, with a good following epilogue. If you enjoy reading travel books that focus as much on the character developmentof the author as they do on the excitement of the travel itself, you will not be disappointed with "Cycling Home from Siberia". 5-stars!
GrahamReviewed in Australia on 26 January 20141.0 out of 5 stars Dull and boring
Ive read many exciting, witty, well written books on the topic of long distance adventure cycling but sadly this wasn't one of them.
Once the author splits from his riding partner very early in the book the author pretty much wastes the readers time with the only vivid descriptions of his trip being his love of God and church.
I cant believe anyone could cycle alone through the many beautiful countries the author visited and have very little to say about what he did, the people he met and the places he saw.
This book was a waste of my valuable time and money

Extreme cycling to say the least!
janetReviewed in Canada on 11 December 20215.0 out of 5 stars Quite an Adventure!
I love Rob Lilwall's writing - he is honest, humorous, and in the moment. Why anyone in their right mind would decide to cycle down the eastern side of Siberia starting in the middle of winter is beyond me, but it makes for a great adventure. Rob's story is full of unusual experiences and interesting people. On a journey like this you can't help but find out a lot about yourself, and Rob includes that in his insightful writing.
