Breath taking is what i was expecting taking into consideration this game was first announced way back in 2012 before the PS4 was even released. The game has been in development for so long combined with the multiple delays that we're now at a point where the PS5 is out.
The worst possible time to release this game in my opinion because now we have to compare it to that to see how it should be running despite the fact none of us can get hold of a PS5 until sometime next year.
Honestly looking at the state of this game running on the Base PS4 model maybe CDPR should have just abandoned release on the PS4 & Xbox One entirely, delayed the game further to fix the numerous bugs and released exclusively on next gen consoles and PC.
GRAPHICS
What, what am i looking at here..? The visuals are so blurry/murky and washed out. Not helped by the fact that the game isn't even running in 1080p Its running somewhere between 720p and 900p.
Population density is very low with only a handful of NPC's roaming streets. Traffic and cars on the road seem almost non existent creating this feeling of a lifeless city which i assume is the opposite of what they were going for. Isn't Night City supposed to be over populated? Rather than a ghost town.
Frame drops when driving around Night City are starkly noticeable dropping as low as 20fps and can even drop as low as 15fps. That's really bad even for console standards.
There seems to be this bizarre argument of "What were you expecting on a 7 year old console?" Well considering CDPR were developing the game to run on this console for the past 7-8 years and having seen the likes of games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War which look stunning then yes i was expecting this to be optimized to push the PS4 to its limits and get the best out of it.
I might also add this game was being promoted heavily on consoles, remember Keanu Reeves at E3 on the Xbox stage? Ironically the Xbox One Base console has the worst performance out of all of them.
Did we also forget this game was supposed to release back in April before Next Gen consoles even existed? There really is no excuse.
If you are lucky enough to own a Next Gen console such as the PS5 or Xbox Series X you can expect a stable frame rate at around 60fps and better performance overall but be warned the game is still running in backwards compatibility on these consoles as there is no PS5 or Series X version yet. That's coming next year and who knows when next year when they have so many bugs to fix first.
If you're a console gamer my advice is to wait, save for a next gen console and get the game when it has been optimized to run on them properly. Otherwise you really are missing out on the full experience.
CDPR have gained a huge amount of goodwill over the past few years with the release of The Witcher 3. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't criticize when they don't deliver what was advertised. In fact they went out of their way to hide gameplay footage on base consoles until release day. A hugely scummy move, they knew it was bad but still wanted those pre-orders. That's enough to shift my opinion on them as a company and honestly puts a bit of a downer on the game.
Beware of 5 Star reviews that lack any constructive feedback. If you need to see the performance for yourself before buying go to Digital Foundry's page on Youtube. They give a detailed look at performance on base consoles and comparisons with PC. That's all for now, for me its unplayable in its current state so i'll wait until the PS5 is available and they release an optimized version.
