Paul Heatley deserves massive credit. You can tell that he has mastered his craft. Clearly, he is extremely talented, but he must nonetheless have worked and worked and worked to become as good as this.
Heatley's writing has it all: the super-sharp prose, the visceral action and violence, the authentic dialogue. He knows how to keep a story moving relentlessly forward in a way that's utterly compelling and addictive. He honestly deserves massive success, and, although the world isn't exactly fair all the time, I'm sure his big break will come.
For me, the late 1970s UK setting made Cutthroat particularly enjoyable. The seedy, monochrome era lends itself to noir in a way that almost becomes horror. I loved the book: because the writing is so good I didn't want to fly through it, but making myself slow down wasn't easy.
