Review

"...the Aussie author is able to create a world teeming with quirky characters and strange creatures with superhuman abilities. Here's the brilliant part - you're immersed in a fantasy world, but confronted by real hard issues of racism, discrimination and exclusion. The seamless interweaving of alien and human elements makes this a compelling read."- Kindle Ninja Reviews. "To call it simply a YA or SCI-FI read would be to not do it justice. It is, instead, a true mingling of some sci-fi, a coming of age story of Nell, some fantasy throw in for good measure."- Jay Mittener TOP 1000 Amazon REVIEWER "Your book has also reached to the age of 70. I am like you, I always wished I could travel to other worlds, fly like a bird, and drop into anyplace I wished. Wonderful imaginings."- Shirley Collum "Curse" grabs your attention within the first few pages...I especially enjoyed the aspects of the three different species-human, phib, and wintar-and Nell's slightly turbulent relationship with her father and newly-discovered extended family."- E. Nell is about to reach her seventeenth birthday, she has found that she has special powers like she is able to communicate with animals, and for a while she has had very strange dreams. Nell is looking forward to going to university, but when her father puts a stop to this she wonders why. Nell soon learns the life she knows is about to change dramatically, and that her ancestry is not what she thought. Soon she finds her life in danger, she must face prejudice, and fight for her life to try and restore peace to a race that has become divided by finding the book of Wexkia.

I really enjoyed the story. I thought for a story about aliens it was a unique and original. Like most books that are the first in a trilogy this is setting the foundations for what I think will be a superb trilogy. I am looking forward to seeing how the characters and story develop over the next two books.

Not normally the sort of book I would buy – a kind of mixture of sci-fi, fantasy and real life – but I bought it after reading the ‘look inside’ extract and thought it worth stepping outside my comfort zone for. It is essentially a coming of age novel; very imaginative and completely engaging. I warmed to Nell, the main character, and loved the way her story unfolds (discovering she’s not actually human!) although I felt she seemed a little younger than sixteen. For me, this places Curse as a solid MG book worth 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars An honest review from someone who liked it, but... 28 Aug. 2014
By April Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I want to make one thing clear, the book's premise is very good. I enjoyed the story line. I just couldn't get into it as much as I wanted to. It reads like a first draft or maybe a screenplay. It may just be that I don't connect with the author's style, but in my opinion the book could do with being run through a few beta readers or an editor. There were parts of the story that seemed disjointed, the dialogue felt not-quite-right, the character made decisions in a split second without putting you through any internal struggle or process. The transitions from one situation to the next were very sudden. I felt a bit slapped around and several times I had to re-read a few pages after going, "Huh?" Maybe it's just me.

It was kind-of like one of those old wooden roller coasters - fun, but it whips you around and you're a bit dazed after. I think that with just a bit of work this book could definitely be 5 stars. Or a great movie. I'd totally watch it if it were made into a movie.

The book is about 3 (and more) alien races and the main character, Nell, is a blend of 2 of them who looks human and lived on Earth until just before her 17th birthday when the "changes" would begin. The story line is very original, the different races were intriguing. I thought it might be an allusion to the horrors of racism. This story follows Nell through her coming of age and the machinations of those who would destroy her. Good stuff.

Like I said, I liked the premise but the crafting of the story could use some tweaking. Definitely worth the money I paid for it on Kindle. It's a fast read, too. Read it in about 5 hours. If the author does some tweaking I would love to check it out and revise my review. I'm an author too, and I hope my critiques are not too harsh and can help in making a good book great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Great! 9 Dec. 2013
By Veritas Vincit - Published on Amazon.com

To be perfectly honest, I was looking for something fun and relatively mindless to while away a day or two, and this was a suggested option for me. I hadn't read the description and simply dove in, determined to get lost in something mildly entertaining, but nothing that would wrap me up as completely as this book instantly did. First of all, it is one of the most unpredictable books that I've read in a long time, simply in the sense that there weren't any of the tell-tale plot twists or hackneyed story lines, even in a genre like fantasy/sci-fi that does tend to use similar conventions. From start to finish, the book kept me guessing, and a book that can continue to surprise is always one worth paying attention to. I particularly like how Furse didn't immediately pose Nell as anything but what she was, a normal, scared teenager facing the challenges of growing up. Normality is key to the believability of a story, particularly when there is so much else about the story that is unbelievable and "out there" so to speak. Grounding the narrative in a really compelling, strong young woman, and complicating it with a very odd father figure was a very real and human element of the story that drove it forward, even as it became clear that Nell was anything but. Readers need those points of relativity to make a story connect with them on a normal level, since it can be difficult for some people to fully immerse themselves into a fantasy world without some sort of lifeline to the real world. Furse provides those human moments in spades, and for that, I will certainly be reading the rest of the Wexkia trilogy. This was quite a fortuitous find!

3.0 out of 5 stars Review: Curse (Wexkia trilogy Book 1) ... 15 Nov. 2016
By Juan M. Rodriguez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
It's the first of the Wexkia trilogy. It's just so-so. The author must introduce the characters and pose the issue or issues confronting them. The main character is a teen girl, the daughter of two alien species. Usually progeny of such unions develop certain characteristics particular to one or the other of the parents characteristics. There are also those children that develop with both parents characteristics. This anomaly is known as the 'Curse' because these are considered doomed to madness. The young woman is at the beginning of her ultimate development and her dad and other family are concerned she is headed toward being one of the anomalous offspring. The story wends from there.
4.0 out of 5 stars What is Nell? Alian or Human? 14 Nov. 2015
By Gisela H. Sedlmayer, author of the Talon book series - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
As Nell's 17's birthday draw nearer, she experiences some changes in herself and could not comprehend it. She is becoming more aware of things and she can hear animals talking and can hear thoughts of other people. She is asking herself 'what is happening to myself? Is that normal growing up?'

Until her father and newly reviled relatives unveil to her that she is not only a human, she also is an alien from another world. And here starts the incredible story of a teenager, who was hurled into space to land on the alien planet.

Dale Furse, the author, did a good job to put Nell as she was, a normal, scared teenager facing the challenges of growing up as she was put onto the alien world.

She learns more about herself and her true self as the story unfolds, as she realizes that she is both, human and alien.

A great story for young teenager, YA and even to the age of 99 years.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting & Magical Adventure That will Captivate Your Imagination! 13 Dec. 2013
By K. Eller - Published on Amazon.com

Curse by Dale Furse is one of the Best Sci-fi/fantasy books I have read this year! It is a feast for the imagination with vivid imagery and non-stop Spellbinding action. For me this was quite a refreshing and engrossing read! The Author delivers her story with a perfect blend of mystical fantasy, Science Fiction, a touch of romance, mystery and personal growth. I was intrigued with the strong, relatable characters, flowing dialogue and a unique plot that has you guessing all throughout the story the exact nature of Nell’s mysterious heritage. I was pleasantly pleased with the fact that I could not put it down yet, it moved along seamlessly and quickly so I didn't have to.

The author provides her readers with a fresh and engaging plot that becomes quite thought provoking. How well do you really know a person? And how much do we truly know ourselves or our heritage? I feel that all people keep many aspects of themselves hidden from others. As much as you think you `know' someone else, in reality, you really only know what they `want' you to know. That is a simple fact.

I found the Flow of the dialogue to be excellent and engaging...with a natural tone to it. I found myself immersed in the vivid scenery and emotional entanglements as each scene progressed unto the next. This author knows her craft and it is brilliantly portrayed in the way this story unfolded. Nell, our wonderful heroine is so easy to connect with on an emotional level. I found myself connected to her honesty, her flaws and moved by her courage to keep moving forward in her quest to help her race and save herself, she is pushed out of her comfort zone throughout every step of her journey and the reader can relate to her fears and insecurities but, we cheer her on with each new triumph.

For a New Writer Ms. Furse effortlessly leaves a new reader with a Memorable `First Impression'. This new author certainly showcases her seasoned writing skills and creativity in a way that pulls the reader into her story by dropping subtle hints to keep you guessing laced with little tidbits to keep your curiosity peaked. I look forward to seeing the next book released in this trilogy. I can’t wait to see what is waiting for Nell around the next corner!

I give this one two thumbs up! It was an entertaining and engrossing read with a unique story plot I haven't read before. If you enjoy delving into the depths of Alien worlds, magical abilities and mysterious quests, then this is a great Book to curl up with!
