Product Description

Review

"Chris Riddell's spindly spidery illustrations . . . capture perfectly the eccentric ebullient nature of the book . . . Quite graphic in its violence, this one will be relished by boys of nine and up" (Philip Womack Literary Review)

"It is a page-turning adventure, written with gusto and inventiveness" (The Sunday Times)

"Thrilling and often downright frightening" (Through the Looking Glass)

"The spine felt a definite tingle, but the stomach never lurched . . . the writing is superb. It delivers a period feel without ever descending into pastiche. Highly recommended" (thebookbag.co.uk)

"Don't miss this Dickensian thriller!" (Kraze Club) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

...I enjoyed this very much, as did my friend (also adult female). Very different to the futuristic/fantasy novels so popular today. Victorian London was not pleasant and is an ideal background to the mysterious adventures of the wonderful Barnaby Grimes. Hopefully this will encourage children to explore genuine Victorian literature.

Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Loved this book so much that may read it to my year 5 class. I know they'd love it but I think the vocabulary may be too challenging for them as an independent read. Independent for fluent readers of 10+

This is one of the best books I have ever read it is a bit groosim in the first couple of pages but it was very well discibed, yet the whole book was very well discribed. The auther is very good at flowing the past to the present unlike other authers just say for example two weeks later...etc.
This is a great book and I highly recomend it.

A great book. Would recommend to people who want a page turner book and expecting a mystery. I'm going to pick up the other books as well.
