About the Author
The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her fatherÂs home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

These are the original stories and illustrations dating back from 1941 -1966 so I have read some criticisms of some of the illustrations, especially the ones in which the man with the yellow hat smokes a pipe. There have also been calls for a new revised and perfectly politically correct version. George does all sorts of things a child shouldn't, from calling the fire department, to climbing on electric wires, and of course going away with strange man in yellow hat. So I suppose the book isn't for everyone, but I quite like it the way it is, without revisions for complete political correctness, and becoming completely boring as well. If your child is intelligent enough to know that he or she is not really a monkey, I see no problems.
Curious George is the original bad boy of children's literature. Edited by the legendary editor and publisher , Ursula Nordstrom. Unlike most children's literature of the time, Curious George did not attempt to teach children to be good. It revelled in naughtiness Curious George acts very much like a naturally inquisitive child and chaos often ensues.Read more ›
Subsequent usage has proven her wrong. Whilst our toddler has the attention span of a gnat, yes, we are only able to get through a few pages of narrative at a time, but this is her absolute favourite book to look at, and the first thing she picks up if you ask her if she wants to read. And once you've gone through all the stories, it's possible to take her through an abridged version using the illustrations if your vocal cords are tired. And she will sit quietly on the sofa, just thumbing through the book and looking at the pictures for 15 - 20 minutes at a time (which is a testament to the effectiveness of the illustrations and not my daughter's budding genius!). And we return to this book several times a day. We've had it for a couple of months and she still doesn't tire of it.
The only one of the books that she doesn't sit still for at all is the alphabet book, but I'm sure that will come in time. Speaking of which, it seems that the words used to illustrate the alphabet book were chosen because of their phonetic value; I suspect this may be because the thoughtful Reys were not native English speakers (but spoke and wrote in several languages) and understood one of the best ways to learn language. Top marks there.
