Book Description

A frank and funny memoir by a hugely popular actor, presenter and author.

From the Inside Flap

Tony Robinson is a much-loved actor, presenter and comedy icon. His career has lasted over fifty years, taking him from child stardom in the first stage production of Oliver! through a series of sometimes riotous misadventures before he landed the role of Baldrick, loyal servant and turnip aficionado in Blackadder.

Along the way he was bullied by Steve Marriott, snubbed by Liza Minnelli, and was pushed into a stinking London dock by John Wayne. He infuriated Rex Harrison, wrote and starred in Maid Marian and Her Merry Men, and created national outrage in the cutting-edge comedy series Who Dares Wins, before exposing his bits in the live touring show with great aplomb. He also presented Time Team for twenty years, coralling a group of quirky, opinionated academics as they ruthlessly dug up countless gardens in the name of archaeology.

Now, in his long-awaited autobiography, he also reveals his passions and commitments, writes about his friends and family, and describes the sadness of losing both his parents to dementia. Packed full of incident and insight, No Cunning Plan is a funny, self-deprecating and always entertaining read.

It won't travel with me to any desert island but Tony Robinson's autobiography is a conversational read which gives an insight into this versatile actor and presenter. You can hear Tony's voice in every line and it feels authentic. As a child actor he entered the profession early and he charts his evolution through to the present, dwelling on his years in rep. I'd like much, much more anecdotal material from the Blackadder years and was surprised that we got virtually no insider take on Time Team, a show he presented for two decades. Did someone pay him to keep quiet or maybe there's another book in the pipeline which might delve where no archaeologist has dared to tread before.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this interesting and entertaining book. I guess most people know Tony because of his role as Baldrick in the TV series 'Blackadder' or as one of the Time Team presenters, but he has done much more than these two roles. Starting as a child actor, he has enjoyed a long and varied career as an actor, writer, presenter and political activist in Equity, the actor's trade union, and in local politics. He writes openly and honestly about his life and its many ups and downs and comes through all these experiences smiling at the end. I heartily recommend this book as a book worth reading for its honest account of the author's life in the entertainment business.

This was a very interesting read, I found the book captures you early on with Tonys childhood and upbringing, some fantastic tales throughout and lots of laughs. I did find the last quarter felt a little rushed and the topics wandered a little. A very enjoyable read covering a a very talented and interesting man.

If the idea of an autobiography is to help you get to know someone then this succeeds. However if you're like me you might not come away particularly liking him. He's honest where I'd have kept my mouth shut but he doesn't tell us enough about what most people probably bought the book for.

There is so much more to this man than I ever knew. There's a lot about him I don't like but there is very much more that I do. This story of his varied activities over the years is fascinating.

A hilarious book. Tony had had a very varied career and although we all think we know him, he is far more then Baldrick. A very enjoyable read.

A good read. Tony Robinson has an easy, aimiable style and doesn't dwell to long in any one topic so that this makes for a well-paced biographical read
