The initial issue I had was that thick layer of frozen solid is stuck on the side (inside the bowl), which if left will make insulation for the mixture to get cold and therefore not making the ice cream texture thick enough and also the solid is difficult to remove from the bowl, making a lot of waste. This was solved simply by swishing some water in the frozen bowl before using it:
"Solution: Freeze as normal. A few hours before preparing, pour about 1/4 cup of water in the container, and “swish” it around so it covers the bottom and sides. The water should freeze almost instantly. Give it 10-30 seconds, then do it one or two more times. You want a nice layer of ice around the entire inside. If you still have problems, you may need to do this process a second time.
Voila, your ice cream will no longer be stuck to the sides when you make it."
My only regret is that now I want the Professional one with a compressor! I thought this would take too much space in the kitchen and for storage, but with this, you can make different (or same) ice creams continuously. With ICE30, you cannot do this and have to freeze the bowl again before using it another time. I knew this but I was not sure if I would really use the machine so often! I am now making a lot of Japanese ice cream (matcha, miso, black sesame etc) for friends which are not found in supermarkets.
I switched it on. Then I poured in the mix - very clean job through the opening on the top.
And then there was noise. Lots of it. My drill is not that loud. I certainly would not have it in the same room I was having dinner. But knowing it was only going to be for about 30' I got on with things like washing up and making a delicious hot chocolate topping and by the time I was used to it the sorbet was ready! I covered it with a clean tea towel to make sure nothing flew in through the opening. Part of me hoped the tea towel would cover the noise as well but it didn't.
So after about 25-30' my mix was nicely churned - perhaps a little over-churned for the paddle. The paddle is plastic and therefore not the sturdiest of things so you need to keep an eye on the time and make sure you don't let it over-cool. If you do, I found out, it makes it hard to pull the paddle out and it feels like it might break. I was very careful so it was ok but next time I'll get my sorbet out a minute earlier. I put the sorbet in a little container that I stored in the freezer to get a bit harder. I could have served a couple of portions straight away because the the mix that was at the bottom of the bowl was really nice and hard and didn't need to go in the freezer. But I'm the kind of cook that nibbles as she cooks so by the time food is ready I'm already full.
Would I recommend it? Yes, definitely. Good value for the price range and 5 years guarantee. Go for it!
I have a long list of flavours they don't sell at the supermarket I look forward to making this summer!
As mentioned by others, it is quite noisy so if it's churning away next door to your sitting room in the evening it can be annoying - mine quickly got moved to the utility room well away. Noise aside, it looks good, is sturdy (unlike the ones you get for £25) and most importantly produces excellent results.
Used the recipes in book provided with machine, it's spoilt us for any other ice cream, tastes absolutely delicious. Would recommend this product highly, and price on Amazon is cheaper than elsewhere, always a bonus. Fast delivery too.
