BUT. The blob of white goo that holds the crystals in place does not completely cover the KTP; about half its length is exposed. To the naked eye it just looks like a speck, but inspecting it with a good magnifying lens while pumping it I can see the cuboidal crystal with a well-defined YELLOW beam inside it emanating from the point at which the pump beam hits. The beam is very dim and none of it makes it out of the OC, but it is definitely there and it is definitely a beam and it is definitely yellow, not green.
There is no way I can get any of it into a spectrometer, but given the narrow range of wavelengths which look yellow I reckon that what is going on is that the vanadate is lasing at 1064nm and 1340nm at the same time, and the KTP is mixing these wavelengths to produce the sum frequency at 593nm. This is certainly possible, but it is not commonly done; it seems to require a laboratory and a lot of fiddling about to make it work, according to Google. So to find it happening at all, even if the efficiency is ruinously low, as a result of a manufacturing defect having created the conditions by chance, is extremely cool and froody, and certainly justifies five stars.
In due course I intend to buy another one and see what that does.
