Although this is the 4th in this particular series, I was able to follow the story well having not read the previous books. The author provides enough of the back story so that you aren't completely confused. It has however, now made me add the other books in the series of books to read!
The first chapter in the book is an excellent example to me of how to draw your readers in and make them carry on reading. Tense, gripping and edge of your seat stuff, you are desperate to find out more.. This completely had me hooked as I tried (and failed) to pick up clues along the way. I gave up eventually trying to second guess everything and just enjoyed being pulled along for ride!
The initial investigation begins when a skull is found in the wood of a trail in Black Rock Falls. Although thought to possibly be a skull from many years ago, the investigation soon turns into a full on murder hunt when another body is found tied to a tree with bullet holes. When another body is found.....and another, Alton and Kane have their work cut out to try and get to the bottom of it all. Who is doing this? What is their motive? Is think linked to something darker. Yes it most definitely is!
D K Hood as done brilliantly in setting up the tension in this story and doesn't really let up until the end of the book. I found myself almost biting my nails after each page as the action was continually ramped up. I have to say that I really liked the dynamics between Alton and Kane. They really worked for me and has made look forward to starting at the beginning and exploring their characters even more as from I've picked up from this book, they have both led pretty interesting lives...
What a brilliant introduction into the world of D K Hood...... Living in the UK, I don't hike as much as people do in the US...After reading this book, I never will!
Woah!!!! I have read and loved the previous three books by DK Hood in the Detectives Alton and Kane series and I’ve really, really enjoyed every one of them. So book four had to be read as quickly as I could and boy, I’m pleased that I didn’t wait.
I love reading about Sherrif Alton and her Deputy Kane, they’re great characters with good chemistry and for a small town in Montana, they sure have a lot of crime to deal with. DK Hood doesn’t hold back when describing the crimes, murders and crime scenes, that suits me fine but boy she does come up with some pretty awful stuff. I’m for one very pleased that these books are fiction!
I read The Crying Season in a few days, I just couldn’t put it down and had to keep reading. When I got to the end I remember taking a deep breath and I think that I’d been holding my breath for the last few chapters. What a climax it was!!! And boy I was not impressed when I thought that it had finished but thankfully the epilogue tied things up and made me feel better.
But since finishing I have thought about this book a lot, to say that I loved it would be an understatement and I just keep thinking ‘Wow’. I’ve loved all the books in the series but I think that this one has to be the best. If you haven’t read the others then do, you won’t regret it and you’ve got some brilliant books to read! I, for one, will be eagerly and impatiently waiting for book five. This series really does get better and better.
Firstly thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced copy of D K Hood's 4th book in the series. Once again D K Hood delivers a cracker of a story. It moves along at a fast pace and before you know its over. It is gritty and at times you feel as if you are right there in the pages with Jenna and the gang. I loved every single bit of this book. It really does remind me of Karen Rose and Alison Brennan. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. Cant wait for the next one.
Another great instalment in the Kane & Alton series, I just love these stories and the way the characters interact with each other. I’m just waiting to see how long it will be before they finally get together.!!! Plenty of twists and turns to keep me engrossed and I have to say I thought I knew who the killer was but I was very wrong. I can’t wait for the next instalment, D.K Hood is a brilliant author!!!
The storyline throughout was dark, tense and terrifying! It was nail-bitingly good and at the end of each chapter, I just wanted to keep reading right through the next! The ending was fantastic and it had me holding my breath throughout. This author certainly knows how to keep her readers in suspense and get their hearts beating faster! I literally cannot wait until the next book!!!
