About the Author

My perfect day: Laptop; WiFi availability; Java Mocha; characters demanding their stories be told; a plot that comes together; and hours to live in an alternate reality. Afterward, I return home to wash dishes and vacuum. Seriously, a love for the written word has always been an integral part of my life. As a preteen, I devoured Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys' Mysteries. When I reached my teen years, the romance genre became my favorite and that has never changed. A few years ago, I decided to try my hand at writing and I've been doing so with a passion ever since. My current focus is writing western romance, both contemporary and historical, and several of my titles have made it into the top 10 in those categories on Amazon. Because I hate saying goodbye to characters who have lived with me for months, I usually create a series so they can be revisited from book to book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Westward Ho! 11 Feb. 2013
By GamingLady - Published on Amazon.com

Have you ever wondered what life was like for people traveling from the East across the plains to places like Wyoming and Oregon? Read this book and you will find out! The book was fairly well researched (she shared her sources in the back of the book) and it is written well. Of course I have read many of Verna's books and they have satisfied my need to go of wanderiing somewhere in the dead of winter. If you like westerns and want to know how many of our families got past the Continental Divide ......this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Verna Clay's books 5 Feb. 2014

A sweet Western romance about a young widow and her son traveling The Oregon Trail in 1866. Well edited. The author used modern sayings in the dialog that were a distraction -- but not enough to deter me from reading more of Verna Clay's work. I do enjoy Verna Clay's books when I want to read something light, touching and interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memorable tale of pioneers on the Oregon Trail 13 Jan. 2017
By Value Shopper - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I was taken on a wagon journey through the 2,000 miles from Missouri to Willamette Valley in Oregon. Romance woven in with tales of hardship, adapting, maturing ......you can't help but develop a sense of adventure. The author makes the journey and historic stops interesting with incidents and accidents that bring those places to life, gripping the reader.

Only the ending seemed rushed, as with many stories that neatly tie ends together in perfect little packages, in contrast to the prolonged adventure of the bulk of the story. But it made for a good read. Particularly when the author peopled the pioneers with a mix of family folks, prospectors, 'fancy' women and church ladies, adding conflict and showing characters evolving, it touches the reader. Hop on and travel west!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 5 Feb. 2013

If you like wagon train stories then this book is for you. It is a good story that keeps you wanting to read more and more. The only disappointment in the book was that it had to end !! I can't wait to read the next one and am going to buy the three books in another series written by this author as soon as I have finished this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very thoughtful historical 1 July 2013
By Loree - Published on Amazon.com

I thorough enjoyed this story, its plot line, the characters and the well-researched history of the Oregon Trail. I felt it a very realistic story. Other reviewers felt that Hallie's interest in Cooper was too soon after the death of her husband, but the reality of that era was that a woman alone was a near impossibility. It was survival to remarry soon after the loss of a spouse. English historical novels have the heroins in black dresses for a year and then gray, but no so in the frontier. I would definitely recommend this book and would look for this author again.
