Review

Impressive ... an effective account of a hideous time of brutal politics and the desperate compromises many made to make life possible (David Mills The Sunday Times)

The great originality of this novel ... is the blending of the universal and personal experiences of the Spanish Civil War (Sebastian Lapaque Figaro 2014-11-05)

An extraordinary book . . . very powerful (Eileen Battersby Irish Times 2017-03-15)

Lydie Salvayre orchestrates her story like a true maestro (Jéròme Garcin BibliObs 2014-09-09)

A turbulent, magnificent novel that shines a new light on the Spanish Civil War. It resonates with the power of a manifesto for modern times (François Busnel Express 2014-11-13)

A seriously important novel ... The novel Pasolini would have written had he been the son of Spanish exiles (Josep Lambies Time Out Barcelona)

Lydie Salvayre has cultivated a resounding anger... Cry, Mother Spain is the novel and the tribute of an impassioned voice (Philippe Lançon Libération 2014-11-05)

Lydie Salvayre creates a dynamic harmony in a language that elevates grit, heroism and beauty (Jean Birnbaum Le Monde)

Lydie Salvayre has written a novel about the Spanish Civil War unlike any other. Her approach gives her story an astonishing power and a unique perspective (Mercedes Monmay ABC Cultural)

A magnificent novel. A brilliantly written family saga and a mesmerising study of memory and historical reconstruction (Fran G. Matute El Mundo)

Format: Hardcover
Lydie Salvayre is a French novelist. This book won the 2014 Prix Goncourt. It is based on her mother's recollections of the Spanish Civil War.

A 15 year-old,village girl joins the Republican side along with her brother. She returns pregnant to a village and family bitterly divided over the brutal war. The book also deals with the Francoist atrocities on Mallorca in which the Catholic Church colluded.

The account, translated, is a sobering and effective one . It's focus is one of the most vicious and brutal wars of the twentieth century.

Format: Hardcover
Read this. It's a beautifully constructed account of one of the most vicious and internecine wars of last century, skilfully interweaving fact, fiction and personal memory. Its often dry, funny and tongue-in-cheek tone brilliantly frames the author's outrage at the horrors perpetrated against civilians, usually with the explicit blessing of the so-called Mother Church. Reading it this week, while events around the world unfold, one realises that plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose – and what are we going to do about it? Let's not romanticise war, and let us at the very least remain honest and bear witness. This is a wonderful book, and the translation is just as a translation should be – less like a door than a perfectly clean glass window; it lets in the light.
