Lauren Layne is probably one of my favourite authors right now, if not definitely my favourite chick-lit author. I can say without a doubt that even though this is only her third new-adult novel, she does NA better than any well-established NA author. Yes, there may be tropes in her books (Isn't She Lovely had the sexual assault trope), but she approaches them in such a way that doesn't bother me. And yes we've heard of this kind of story before and we can guess the outcome, but Lauren makes them fun.

Crushed tells the story of Michael St Claire, the final character from the famous trio. He's run off to Texas after finding out some bad news and truth be told, he's being a d**k. In Texas he encounters Chloe, an overweight but very funny and full-of-character kind of girl. Because he identifies with her situation (being in love with someone who can't see you) he decides to help her out. And you can probably guess the rest.

Like the other two books before it, this one is filled with lots of fun, heart and laugh-out-loud moments. And what I like best about Lauren Layne's style is that it's reminiscent of those late 80s-90s romcoms that you just don't get anymore. The rest of Lauren's books are chick-lit ones (and I will definitely be reading everything she writes) but I do hope she returns to NA. I really enjoy her characters and her snappy dialogue.

This book made me laugh out loud while everyone was asleep and I just couldn't put the book down until I finished it. Like the books I've come to read about romance you think it's going to be simple girl meets boy story and they fall in love etc, but it takes time to grow feeling for someone and this books shows how even someone who been hurt before can still find love.

I'm excited to read the next book in the series.. One click for sure.

How did I miss this book? I'm a total Lauren Layne fan-girl and yet somehow this completely slipped off my radar.

This is Michael's story. After causing Ethan and Olivia's break-up and then been rejected by Olivia when he subsequently declared his undying love, Michael's cup runneth over when he finds out that his Dad is not his father, that is a man called Tim Patterson. So Michael gives up his privileged life in Manhattan and travels to Texas where he takes a job as a tennis coach at a local country club in order to surreptitiously get closer to his biological father.

Michael's plan is to get to know Tim through his son Devon, who happens to be dating one of Michael's clients, Kirsten. Michael is pretty cynical about life and is having a great time with the bored Texan housewives who think that a hot tennis coach has more to offer than just tennis lessons, and as Michael acknowledges, most of them play better tennis than he does anyway.

One afternoon when the beautiful Kirsten arrives for her lesson she is accompanied by her younger sister. In true fairytale tradition, Chloe is curvy while Kirsten looks like a model, Chloe has an unruly mop of curls while Kirsten has beautiful straight blonde hair, Chloe is a bookish, clever, nerd while Kirsten is athletic and failing at college. Michael also notes that Chloe is in love with her sister's boyfriend (his half-brother).

Soon Chloe and Michael are joining forces, Michael will help Chloe get fit, and hence catch Devon's attention, but Michael's motives are not revealed (now I come to think about it, Michael's motives seem a bit off anyway, but who cares?). Whilst Michael dislikes Chloe and doesn't find her attractive in any way, he finds her attitude refreshing.

I received this book in exchange for a honest review.

This is the first book that I read from this writer, so I haven’t read the two stories before this one but that wasn’t a problem for reading this book.

What do you do when you discover that your father isn’t your father? That your real father is a man you don’t know and that he lives with his family in Texas. Well, this happens to Michael St. Claire and he decides that he will go to Cedar Grove in Texas in search of his real father.

But what do you do when you’re there? Well, Michael decides to hang out and discover who his father really is before he goes and tell his father about his existence. He does this by working in the club where his father is a member from. There he meets beautiful Kristen Bellamy. A young woman who reminds him of his first love. But Kristen is dating his new half-brother Devon. Now, what will be better than to get close to Kristen and maybe through her get close to his ‘new’ family? And maybe he even can use Kristen’s sister Chloe too?!

Chloe Bellamy has always been second best. Her sister Kristen is the beautiful and slim one and Chloe’s the mouthy and curvy girl who loves school and hates sports. Her only friend at school was Devon Patterson until he became popular and fell in love with her older sister Kristen. Which broke Chloe’s heart. For years now she has watched Devon and Kristen together, keeping her feelings to herself.

But now there’s someone who sees through her and offers his help to get her the guy that she always wanted. It’s the chance of her life!

And so begins a summer where in Michael helps Chloe in changing to the girl that Devon would want.
