I have only read two of Sandra Brown's novels, 'THE CRUSH' and 'ENVY' but already I would say that she is one of the few authors whose novels I would rush to buy as soon as it came out. Brown combines romance and suspense in a way that very few authors before her have been able to.
In 'THE CRUSH' Dr. Rennie Newton has just come off a lengthy trial in which hired hit man "Ricky Roy" Lozada was acquitted for the murder of a wealthy businessman. Lozada, who had not hidden his fixation on Rennie throughout his trial, would now like to show her his appreciation for having been forewoman on the jury and the main advocate for his acquittal, . So when one of Dr. Newton's colleagues, who had just won the position of chief of surgery, a position that Rennie had also been up for, turns up dead, Detective Oren Wesley automatically suspects that Rennie hired Lozada to take out the competition.
Once Detective Wesley's suspicions of Lozada's involvement in the murder are pretty much confirmed he enlists the help of former partner and long time friend Wick Threadgill. Threadgill, who has taken an extended leave of absence from the police force, is enticed back into the line of duty having his own personal score to settle with Lozada. However, Wick is not prepared for the strong attraction he feels toward the reticent Rennie Newton, who's damaged past causes her to hold her privacy to the utmost and has allowed no one to get close to her in twenty years.
'THE CRUSH' is a very fast paced story with a good mix of suspense and romance without being overly maudlin. I would highly recommend 'THE CRUSH' to anyone who likes reading a good suspense novel. 4 ½ stars!

This was the first Sandra Brown novel I have ever read and I could not put it down!! I am now a dedicated fan! It provided the perfect mix of thrill and romance and had my heart racing in many places! After reading this book and discovering that Sandra Brown's territory is typically romance novels, I can only commend her on her excellent skill of crime writing. She writes very convincingly through the eyes of psychopath killer Lozada. The romantic element of the novel was, in a word, breathtaking! I love how she portrays Wick's desperate desire for Rennie and she writes the love scenes between them beautifully. It left my heart melting and wishing I had a lover like him!

I loved this story as it's one of her few books where the plot, characters (hero, heroine and supporting cast) and suspense were awesome.

The suspense is perfect, the chill factor is there without being exaggerated. The "villain" has the requisite amount of twisted evilness and the protagonists are well matched. I love the fact that we have a heroine who is a top surgeon (Women Power) and a hero who is hilarious. The romance is sizzling, the witty banter is perfect and the story is engrossing.

If you love Ms Brown's books, her strong heroines, and her hot funny heros than you will love this book.

Sypnosis:
Notorious contract killer Ricky Lozada is on trial and Dr. Rennie Newton is on his jury. Bringing the same dedication she displays as a surgeon to this job, she delivers a verdict of not guilty--and discovers she has a new admirer. Days after Lozada's release, one of Rennie's professional rivals is brutally murdered. Although Lozada's dark shadow looms over the case, Rennie becomes the prime suspect ... while Lozada stalks her and grows more and more obsessed with having her. She forms an uneasy alliance with Wick Threadgill, a rogue detective with his own personal vendetta against Lozada. Wick has nothing to lose by confronting a hit man, who, like the prize scorpions he treasures, strikes so quickly Rennie may never see it coming

Excellent book, exciting stroyline, keeps you in suspense even though you know who the villain is from the beginning. A must for Sandra Brown fans. Has just the right mixture of suspense, romance and a few twists along the way.

This is the first Sandra Brown novel I've read and apparently she has written a lot. I will certaily read more of her books. I really enjoyed this page turner. The story is very gripping and it doesn't ramble on. This is not literature; the characters are stereotypical and the plot unbelievable but nonetheless, it is very enjoyable indeed. What I really hated was the unnecessary sex scenes; I found them embarrassing and had to skip over them as they were so cringey but that was only a very small part of what otherwise was a hugely entertaining, light read.
