Purchase options and add-ons

For over three decades R. Crumb has shocked, entertained, titillated and challenged the imaginations (and the inhibitions) of comics fans the world over. The acknowledged father of "underground comix," Crumb is the single greatest influence on the alternative comics of today. The three companion sets of trading cards - Heroes of the Blues, Early Jazz Greats, and Pioneers of Country Music - have all been sought by collectors. Although, they were rereleased in print as individual card sets, this is the first time they are being published together in book form. A biography of each musician is provided, along with a full colour original illustration by underground cartoonist and music historian R. Crumb.

I say "honest" because it is as it seems. For a pocket-sized book to be an anthology of the pioneers of THREE genres of American music it needs to spread its butter pretty thin or else to be quite selective. In fact it does both and still manage to get away with it. The pen-pictures of the artists and brief and useful and the illustrations are a joy.
To put the cherry on top, there's a very worthwhile CD sampler included.

This is fabulous. Not only is it fantastically illustrated by Robert Crumb, but it also includes a 21-track CD to boot. I have now bought about half a dozen copies of this book as birthday and Christmas presents and everyone has been delighted with it. Brilliant.

R. Crumb has captured and completely encapsulated the history of Jazz, Blues and Country Music by putting flesh and blood into the sometimes flat and haunting ephemeral black and white photographic images of the early purveyors of American Folk Music, while still conveying the pain which helped generate its lasting input to the World Heritage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great images and helpful capsule biographies. Good introductory CD.

My only complaint, and it's a very faint one, is that the CD could do with a little more discographical information. The notes say all tracks are from 1927-1931, but two of them appear to be from 1923 and one from 1926. (It's possible these are later re-recordings by the original artist, but that does not appear to be likely.) On my copy, one track is one incorrectly credited. This is what I have found for recording dates:

01 - Memphis Jug Band - On The Road Again - 1929
02 - Blind Willie McTell - Dark Night Blues - 1928
03 - Cannon's Jug Stompers - Minglewood Blues - 1928
04 - Skip James - Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues - 1931
05 - Jaybird Coleman - River Of Jordan - 1927
06 - Charley Patton - High Water Everywhere - Part 1 - 1930
07 - Frank Stokes - I Got Mine - 1928
08 - Dock Boggs - Sugar Baby - 1927
09 - Shelor Family - Big Bend Gal - 1927
10 - Hayes Shepherd - The Peddler And His Wife - 1930
11 - Crockett's Kentucky Mountaineers - Little Rabbit - 1931
12 - Burnet & Rutherford - All Night Long Blues - 1928
13 - East Texas Serenaders - Mineola Rag - 1930
14 - Weems String Band - Greenback Dollar - 1928
15 - Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra - Kater St. Rag - 1926
16 - King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band - Sobbin' Blues - 1923
17 - Parham-Pickett Apollo Syncopators - Mojo Strut - 1926
18 - Frankie Franko & His Louisianians - Somebody Stole My Gal - 1931
19 - Clarence Williams' Blue Five - Wild Cat Blues - 1923
20 - Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers - Kansas City Stomps - 1929
21 - Jimmy Noone - King Joe - 1928 - not on CD, but listed as track 21
- Bix Beiderbecke - From Monday On - 1928 - actual track 21, listed as "King Joe" by Jimmy Noone

Reviewed in Italy on 5 October 2019
