Having travelled with P & O a few times I was pleased to see a book about Holland America . I was very interested to see if there were any great differences between the two Companies . The ship is covered in great detail as are the meals and the service, In fact some of the descriptions of the food had me practically drooling ! I think taking a cruise is what you make and if you dont want to join in then fair enough but you can never be bored on a cruise, even if you re just watching other people to various things things theres always someone else to chat to .

The cruise destinations are well described to us,, right down to making the choice between going it alone or doing what might be an expensive trip with the cruise ;line . Sometimes for matters of safety or just practicality you have to go with an organised trip. The whole cruise and book was working up to travelling through the Panama Canal. What a chance of a life time , and brilliantly told to us readers !

I dont know if there are other books by the same author but I shall certainly be looking out them,,Reading this bought back many happy memories and I thoroughly enjoyed it .

On a recent visit to the States, a dear friend recommended this book when I happened to mention that I have always wanted to cruise the Panama Canal. This informative, amusing account of Al and Sunny Lockwood's 17 day cruise including the canal has just made me more determined to do it one day soon! This book is brilliant for someone who has never cruised before as it tells you on a daily basis what to expect. I have cruised before although not with Holland America, the couple's choice of ship, so I found I couldn't wait to get to the whole point of the book for me - the traverse through the canal. I was not disappointed. I now know when and where to get the best advantage point to see the near impossible - a huge liner maneuver its way with minimal leeway for error through this man-made wonder of the world. When I book that Panama Canal cruise, I shall definitely re-read this journal and be sure to take it with me.

A first rate encounter of a trip aboard a Holland America Line cruise liner and traversing the Panama Canal. It wasn't only the details of the various places that were interesting but this short book is loaded with useful information and tips for passengers of HAL. An easy read at a very modest price. Highly recommended.
