About the Author

Stephen J. Pavlidis has been cruising and living aboard his 40' sloop "IV Play" since the winter of 1989. Starting in the Exuma Cays, over a decade ago, Steve began his writing career with his guides to the many fascinating destinations he visited. Many of his books stand alone to this day as the quintessential guides to the areas he covers. His books are different than most other cruising guides in some very significant ways. All of the charts in Steve's books were created using data personally collected while visiting each area using a computerized system that interfaces GPS and depth soundings.

HASH(0x8df10754) out of 5 stars Super Dry Book About Being On the Water 26 May 2014
By J Beal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Some of the reviews reference this to accompany the Steve Dodge book. I think that is sound advice. If I were to choose one, I would go with the Cruising Guide to Abaco though. This book provides more detail on the approaches and has "better" maps. It reads much like a map book combined with a quick list of the businesses in the area. There is very little color commentary stemming from intimate local knowledge.

I got the books in hopes of gleaning some of that out. This is the knowledge usually provided during the skipper briefings etc. As a reader, I definitely felt like I "knew more" about some of the cays. But there is little in here about "what places, restaurants, etc...are worth your time.

It would be very helpful if they provided some agendas. I think that might be the difference between a tourist book and a cruising guide.

This is a good comprenhensive guide loaded with good information and a great planing guide. There is a smal amount of info that can be gained by Steve Doges Cruising Guide to Abaco. Either one of these compliments the other.
HASH(0x8e07d9e4) out of 5 stars I am happy that you are using the guide and enjoying it 19 April 2016
By Stephen J. Pavlidis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Thanks to all of you for the kind words concerning my work, I am happy that you are using the guide and enjoying it! In defense of the charges that the book is outdated, I wish for it to be known that it is inherent in writing cruising guides that something changes (businesses) by the time you write a piece and leave that island for the next one. I update these books on a annual basis and depend in a large way on help from cruisers for any changes they might encounter. In this manner it is the cruisers themselves that make your voyage that much more enjoyable. I do this, as do other writers such as the Explorer Chart people, it is the nature of the business. Again, thank you all!!!
HASH(0x8de2cab0) out of 5 stars Outdated! 6 April 2016
By M Greenberg - Published on Amazon.com

We had used this book in 2002, and eagerly purchased an "update" for our 2016 cruise. To our astonishment, after paying a hefty price, it is hardly updated. Not reliable for across the board confidence.
