A short but revealing early work.

Two things were a little deceptive about this book : the promotional materials said it was set in 1934, but it was in fact 1920; secondly, the photo on the cover shows a 1948 Chevy pickup, but the vehicle used was a 1918 Marlon touring car. If you're looking for a period-piece travelogue, this isn't the book for you; this was more of a beautifully written personal reflection of a young man journeying with his new wife through a new and changing world. It has the viewpoint of youth against the old order in the north and south not that long after the civil war. There were overtones of racism in the descriptions of black people and communities that were encountered, but no more than one would expect from something written over 90 years ago. This account, which was printed in an auto magazine in several installments, shows to good advantage Fitzgerald 's talents for descriptive and reflective writing. His literary abilities are on display here in a comparatively short work, so that the reader can get a good appreciation for Fitzgerald without having to commit to reading a larger book.

This book is very entertaining. It was originally serialized in a newspaper. When I borrowed it from my local library, that is the version they gave me. The newspaper pages, including the advertisements, were pasted on cardboard. (The Amazon version is a regular paperback book.)

THE CRUISE OF THE ROLLING JUNK. I enjoyed every delightful minute of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's drive from Yankeeland to Dixieland!

Somewhat racist but probably typical for the elite of the time.
